42 sounds too small. I'd try a 45

Plus have you turned out the mix screw (under the carb) about 2 turns to start with ?

Yep... 42 sounds small to me too. I run a 50 in the winter and a 48 in the summer on my panhead. You'll need to tune it for your heads and pipes though. Could be very different from mine. My heads have been ported and have oversized intake valves. The suggestion of trying a 45 is the tack I would take. Then see where you stand.

chucklbones-

It revs up nicely because it has an *accelerator pump* which gives a healthy squirt of fuel, thus masking a lean low jet..
This is what I do: Like an S&S you turn off the acc. pump to make sure it doesn't cough when ya rev it, for slow-jetting, or fall on it's face, & you are good.
Well I remove the CV bowl & take off the acc pump rod till I have low speed jetting dialed-in..(same as S&S) except the manner of turning off the acc pump..*same end result*
The re-install it....
.
Reading plugs can be tricky if you are running ethenol-blended gas. This further LEANs out a mix requiring to add more fuel..
aka= bigger jet(s) ARRGH !!
