I am the
very proud owner of a '63 pan in excellent condition. however,
after coming in from a ride and shutting bike down, I come back
and find the Linkert has leaked gas. Looks like it is coming
from a little tiny vent hole located on the high speed adjustment
side of carb. Vent is located in the carb body itself, not in
the bowl. My manual does not identify this hole. I always turn
the gas completely off. Checked to make sure shut-off is working
properly, it is. Took carb off bike and checked float level.
When turned upside down, float is exactly 1/4" from lip
of bowl. This is what service manual calls for. Needle seat looks
to be in good condition. Love this bike, and most definetley
am keeping the Linkert... I just need some help in resolving
this problem... any help would be very much appreciated!

You may find some information on this section. The thread is titled Linkert Question.

you may have one of the old cork floats, they swell and get heavy when they get
old, i had the same problem with my 49 , i put one of cottens lights floats in
my 74-b . set it like palmers book says to set brass floats , have not had any
problems , dont forget to check for manifold leaks when you put things back together.

It would seem that both your petcock and your floatvalve are letting you down.
(Never does only one thing go wrong at a time.)
Floatvalves need only hold back for a few minutes in service, but petcocks must
be absolute.
Linkerts also have a peculiar ability to siphon through the vent holes on M74B's.
I clearly remember working in my open garage one morning as a warm spring thunderstorm
blew in. I heard a faint gurgle. Soon I smelled gas.
Two of my own, and a customer's machine all with M74B's, .... all with decent
petcocks, ... suddenly had purged their bowls simultaneously.
(insert twilight zone theme)

PH Jim -
Glad to hear that you are keeping the Linkert. One fine carb. Probably the finest
thing that can go on a Panhead. They don't even come close to making one of this
quality, nowadays.

Cotten, Thanks, me thinks you hit the nail on the head... Your remark about the
bowls purging themselves, seems to be exactly what my baby is doing. Do I just
replace the thru the tank shut-off, the float needle, or both? What did you do
to fix problem? Also, Why do you think that both my Pan tanks are fitted with
the short ramp gas bungs??? Both tanks require vented caps... My shovelhead only
has short ramp bung on the rightside tank. The left side has a long ramp bung
and uses a ventless cap. Thanks for your insight...

Andrew, I agree with you about the Linkert... Have a buddy who runs a S&S
on his Pan... Not happening here... Jim

Jim!
The petcock is your immediate concern. Unfortunately just throwing new parts
at it might not do much good.
Try to observe if there is some misalignment of the petcock seat by viewing through
it at the top fitting hole. Perhaps you can persuade it straighter.
Inspect for any gouges or problems with the rods' bevel, and grind it in a valve
grinder if necessary. Grunt it in tight once or twice with a pair of pliers,
and see if it helped.
Beware of soft-tipped petcocks.
All of my Pans and Knucks have interchangeing gas caps. Even my 65's, as they
have 3.5 tanks.
Good luck,

Cotten, Been out twice today on the pan... Each time, I shut gas off before shutting
engine down... Let bike run, with gas turned off, until she started to run out
her fuel supply... This approach seemed to help... Atleast, 'til I can further
investigate your advice... Thanks again! On the gas cap issue, I guess I will
be making a ventless cap from a vented cap to use on the left tank... Using a
vented cap on the left side tank and bike being put to rest on the kickstand
with a full supply of fuel, allows gas to escape tank and run all over her left
side... Do not need any more gas leakage !!!

...I too have experienced the same with my M74B & Thanks Cotten!...you have
solved my problem as well.
I rebuilt my linkert but it's been flooding & leaking out if it sits for
awhile even if the petcocks shut. I assumed that it was a float adjustment error
(residual gas in the bowl after shut down), but now that I've read your posts
it hits home & now I'll start looking at the petcock instead of pulling the
carb...........
