I used a copper flake antisieze on my intake. As long as the rings (fereules) were in good shape, and the pipe was clean, I never had a leak. Just tighten each nut the same amount of spins, and wiggle the manifold into a centered position as you tighten, and check the nuts several times after running the motor ( the heating/cooling cycles will cause everything to seat). Keep an eye on the sparkplugs, and don't go WFO until you know there are no leaks.

Antiseize IS best, I agree.
But you never know for certain that you have no leaks unless you pressuretest. Why gamble?
You need a big cork with a hole in it, a regulator and gauge, a little hose and maybe a broken pen for a nipple,..
