What's with the hose behind the rear lifter block?

RooDog, the rubber hose should be the ventline to the oiltank. Because you mention it: Just wondering how he turned that elbow-fitting ? Space is a bit tight there.
The other one between the rear tappetblock and cylinder should be the wiring from the coil to the distributor

Well I sorta agree with your take on the (possible) MIG weld job. With TIG you can dump the filler wire into the pool forcing possible existing air cavities outta the cast.
