Re: 51 pan Oil pouring out primary vent while riding

What is a "primary vent"? When you say the oil is pouring out of the "primary vent", do you mean it is pouring out of the drain hole on the inside primary case? Or that it is coming out of the breather from the engine into the primary case? If it's pouring out of the drain hole, it may be that you h...

Re: hot start..retard or advance spark

I don't think it really matters, hot or cold. If it is kicking back at you, then retard it. If not, leave it advanced.

My '52 starts best when it's hot, if I open the throttle almost all the way before I kick it over, and close it quickly when it starts.

Re: 1965 Clutch/Mousetrap Adjustment

As long as: -When the engine is off, the transmission in gear, and the clutch pulled in, you can push the bike as easily as with the transmission out of gear -When you kick it over to start it, the clutch doesn't slip -You can easily pull the handlebar clutch lever in by hand, 2 or 3 fingers only Th...

Re: 1965 Clutch/Mousetrap Adjustment

The measurement of the clutch release lever(what H-D called the lever on the transmission) should be taken with the lever pulled forwards by hand, taking up all of the free play. As you noted, the adjustment of the position at which the free play is taken up, is done by turning the pushrod adjustin...

Re: Transmission - Shifting into Neutral or First Gear

Andy, When You are sitting like that and I doesn't want to shift, slowly engage the clutch, as it begins to engage it will cause the shafts to spin in the gearbox letting them better self align (the same thing that occurs if someone moves the bike for you!). That is what I referred to back in one o...

Re: Transmission - Shifting into Neutral or First Gear

If I'm sitting still in first with the clutch pulled in, I find that it sometimes helps to rock the bike slightly forward or backwards while shifting into first. I assume that this is relieving friction on the shift clutches/dogs, and allowing them to slip in and out of place in the gears more easily.

Re: Clutch pushrod questions

Hi Buddha:

Well, I thought that your answer was confusing, which is why I added the additional info.

Saying "this end goes in the transmission" could mean at least two different things....

Beunos, beunos. See pic.
Well, actually, either end goes in the transmission, depending on which side you stick it in from...

The end shown goes toward the right side of the bike.

Re: 51 FL

Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're asking, the "little screw down the side of it" is the primary chain oiler adjustment screw.

You'll find it on the S&S pumps.
