Re: 1949 Panhead

While it is not my preference for style, the original question was will it be expensive to maintain, not restore to original. So if you accept that it wont have the value of an original spec Panhead and you are after a chopper, then in theory maintenance shouldn't be horrendously expensive. But, and...

Re: Oil Line Shut-Off Valve

I know it is a bit high tech for a pan but could you just put on an electric solenoid shut off valve at the tank that is open when main power is on, ie wired to the ignition on swith. Valves don't need big voltage to operate so 6v power supply wouldn't be a problem. Quick internet search points to a...

My post on this was meant as a question rather than as a statement.

Re: Clutch pushrod questions

Regarding the cork vs rubber seal clutch hub nut. As far as I am aware the later model rubber seal version will fit the earlier model and should provide a better seal.

Happy to be contradicted, better to be wrong and change it before making a mistake.

Re: Muffler Knowledge

What brand were the repop mufflers? It would good to know what to avoid (or in fact, to know if I haven't already made the same mistake.

Re: Rear chain large difference between tight and loose spot

Stretched chain, get a new one and you should be good to go. I haven't seen anything quite that bad but my shovel was making weird noises like knocking. Turn out it was the bike picking up the chain stretch each rotation. To rule out any issues with the sprockets, mark the middle of the loose sectio...

Re: 49'Pan, Mousetrap question

1950Panhead is right, the twist effort would be to much for a standard twist and pull compared to a lever. There are a few options around and the all use some way to provide a mechanical advantage using a cam or a pulley system. Try twisted choppers, they say their system uses a spiral that is redes...

Re: 49'Pan, Mousetrap question

I also meant to say that I am not sure if the aftermarket twist grip clutch will fit the 49 bars. If you were planning to use the distributor advance twist, you might have problems with return as there is no return spring and it is made to be twisted back not pulled back by spring tension. Someone m...

Re: 49'Pan, Mousetrap question

I haven't seen this done before but the twist grip clutch mechanism does the same job as the clutch lever, i.e. it pulls the clutch cable but instead of squeezing a clutch lever you use a twist grip that operates lime a throttle twist. In which case there should be no issue with using it as you sugg...

Re: Electric starter conversion

I can understand the negative comments about putting an electric start on a kicker Pan but, it depends entirely on the circumstances of each person and/or their own personal choice. I am going tech cycle starter because the bike is for my wife, she only wants a Pan and I don't want to see her kickin...

Re: Midstar wheel adapter

Will these work on a star hub? I have one I plan to use for a disc brake conversion on 58 FLH. It seems to fit and bolt up ok unless there is something I am not seeing.
