1956 Pan identification

#1

Post by whm52 »

I have a 1956 Panhead.....I think?? What I mean is the case says 56 but the title says 1960. Title also says "out of state vehicle." I was told when I bought this bike about 30 years ago that is a '56 that was brought into PA in 1960 and then retitled a 1960. It has straight leg rigid frame so I know damn sure that part is not 1960. Anyone else ever hear of something like this? Thanks.

Yes the VIN is the key. If you want to straighten out the title your friendly DMV police can do a VIN certification for you. Only problem you might have is if it was stolen years ago.

The VIN is "56FLH****" stamped right on the engine case. So, I say it is a 1956. I've had it registered and insured before when it was my every day rider but it hasn't been registered for about 10 years. Thanks for the replies.

So what kind of registration number does it have on the title? Does the number on the title/registration match the number on the motor? If the VIN numbers on the title don't match the motor number then that VIN number would have to be stamped on the frame somewhere or else the title is worthless. Does the title actually say Harley-Davidson or does it say something like "Custom" or "Assembled"?

I know 30 years ago people were a little more careless about those kinds of things, but nowadays a clean title is a must.

Hope you can get it straightened out.

I checked the title and it says YEAR: 1960.....:MAKE: Harley David
There's not enough room to write out HARLEY DAVIDSON. The VIN # is 56FLH****. I am obviously leaving out the last 4 numbers in the VIN but they are there. Under Codes on the title there is an F which says that it is an out of state vehicle. Any help here would be appriciated.

Could be some one put the wrong year on the title the last time it was re-issued or transferred . I had a car that had the wrong color on the title & brought it up to the DMV when I put it in the daughter's name and it was changed ,no problem . You can call them up and ask what you can do about it . If the number one the motor is 56 (unless there are other numbers on the frame or such ) , its a 56 and should be 56 on the title. Tell them that a mistake on the year could effect it value.

What are the belly numbers ?

Where will I find the belly numbers? If they're where I think they are do I have to remove the skid plate?
Bill
P.S. Here's a pic of the bike in question. Hope I know how to do this.

The belly numbers are on the bottom of the cases , the one you can see , with out taking any thing apart is the left one and it should have 56 as the second and third numbers ( 1 - 56 -xxxx ), now if reads 1-60-xxxx , something is not right .You may have to clean some dirt out of the way to see this number . It will be right next to the skid plate. A bright flash light also helps . There are photo's of there location on this sight some where .

The second and third belly numbers are 56. So, I guess it's a 1956.

I would bring that clerical error up with your DMV and have them change the title . You may have to take the bike to them & show them , if you have a Palmer's book , that would be some good reference for them .

I must say that I never realized how good a bright yellow looks on a pan. She's a looker.
