EBay Panhead with Strange VIN

#1

Post by steve_wood » Sat Sep 13, 2008 11:46 am

Check out item 160281883226.

The seller is reporting the VIN as 56lH5889. Doesn't seem right to me.

Does this bike belong to somebody here?

Anybody ever heard of such a VIN?

That VIN would get it impounded in Illinois.

The seller shows no picture, but claims "numbers match". If a VIN matches any other number on a pre-'70 H-D, it's a felony in most states.

Skeptical for a few reasons:

Limited feedback. Bike doesn't belong to seller. Poor short description. No phone number on a high dollar item. No reserve low opening bid is akin to a scam. VIN not only not shown but the question was avoided and sidestepped.

The 'lH' portion of the VIN could be 'FLH', in which case the seller is a minion or the DMV left the 'F' off inadvertently. (Which has happened to me and is not fun to have changed.) Caveat emptor.

yeah the "numbers match" deal always makes me laugh.

i bet if asked the seller would not be able to locate the line bore numbers or even have a clue what they mean.

the best i saw lately was a 50's pan that had "matching numbers" the seller had crudely stamped the engine numbers on the frame! then they photoed the crooked numbers with the freshly chipped paint and said it was 100% original.

Update:

"The seller ended this listing early because the item is no longer available for sale."

Either he got a lot of questions about the VIN or he sold it on the side. IF he did sell it, let's hope the buyer isn't getting screwed.

I emailed him also and emphasized that he needed to figure out what he had going on with the VIN, at least for his own benefit, because Johnny Law might be coming to visit him otherwise. Maybe that did it.

or, for a mere $500.00, you could buy a set of these and make any VIN or belly number you want. The auction listing says that these are sold for "restoration purposes only". Interesting thing is that the set has both style numbers, belly and VIN, and it includes both styles of the numbers which were changed during the production years like the closed and open top 4's. These things are dangerous and a serious threat to all of us in the hobby. And they come from, where else?; California!

FlatHeadSix,

Maybe they purchased them from Jacksonville, AR where you reside? Why is California getting a black eye?

You know, my opinion is that a tool is just that, a tool. There will always be folks who use them wisely, and honestly, as well as those who use them for less admirable purposes.

But you can't blame the tool.

Oz
I wasn't trying to slam California, I was born there, but that's another story.

The reason I mentioned that is because the DMV in California is one of the strictest agencies about inspecting and accepting questionable numbers on vintage bikes, Florida may have them beat, but its close. I just found it interesting that someone in California was manufacturing and selling tools which, I'm sure, the state government would not approve using.

Andy, you are correct about how people choose to use what is available. Its like the old saying that guns don't kill people, people kill people.
