1963 (or there about) VIN numbers

#1

Post by Smac »

Can anyone with a 60's Panhead tell me what the 6's look like on their engine... I have a line on a bike that has an unusual looking "6" on the pad... A picture of a good 63 VIN would be most appreiciated (blur out the last 4 if you want...)

Thanks,
Smac

hello,
The book says it should be a straight back 6, not like this one. my 56 has straight back also.

The 6 in my engine number has a straight back like mbskeam described. When I was getting my bike inspected at the motor vehicle department, they brought out a book with pictures of each H-D number stamp. Their book also showed a 6 with a straight back. But that might have changed and there might be different stamps used for different years. My motor is a '49 w/ a 6 in the digits after the FL.

hello,
the palmer book also did say that: 60,61 and late 59, some might have round backs 6's. I did not say this as you said it is a 63 and the book said straight backs for 63. There are some other fellows here that can verifiy whether this is correct.

Man, first time I log in in about 4 months and here is a question I can answer right off the bat!

My 63 has a straight back 6. Looks funny, like they were trying to perhaps mimic the Apollo font in an effort to capitalize on the Space Race. Or not. :)

In any case, that is how it is supposed to look.

Thanks for all the tips. Looks like a good number. The "6" looked more like a "b" due to the straight back...

Beer on me...
