Post by RRomey » Tue Sep 21, 2010 6:59 pm

Hey guys I'm new here and trying to find some info. I am trying to buy this bike from out of state and my buddy is doing all te legwork for me, so I am trying to figure out if this is ledgit or not. What we have is a VIN 548FLXXXX on both the motor and title. Has anyone ever seen this format before? I hope to have some pictures later. Thanks!

The fact that there is a title with it does not negate the fact that the numbers have been changed at some point and are neither correct nor factory applied. The first two digits are the model year. There were NEVER any three digit stampings for that.
So even with a title, it will never be right, and any future purchaser will walk away if they know their numbers. But then again, people buy crap like that every day! Maybe if you hang on to it until 19548 it will all work out!

RRomey, welcome to the forum. As indicated above, H-D did NOT use three characters to represent the year. But just out of curiosity I’d like to see a clear photo so we can try to determine what happened and I’ve thought of five different things as far as the numbers are concerned, NONE of which would have been done by the Harley factory.

So if you post a clear photo we may be able to figure it out. Also get your buddy to look for the belly numbers on the bottom of each crankcase half. They MAY be in a similar format to one of the following examples: 148-1234; 154-1234; 158-1234.

Also, you didn't say what type of cases they are. Are they genuine H-D Panhead cases? If so, what year(s) do they appear consistent with? Are they aftermarket Panhead-type cases? Or are they cases, H-D or otherwise, that aren't Panhead style? I know that last possibility sounds a bit ridiculous but I've seen it happen. Eric

Well it turns out the numbers were legit, it's a 54FL. Seems that grime coupled with low lighting equals a mis-read number. Thanks for the info guys, love the site, hope to visit it often in the future.
