VIN vs belly numbers

#1

Post by kehughes » Sun Dec 11, 2011 4:00 pm

Has anyone ever came across an engine of one year's VIN with the previous year's belly number that is legit. Was this ever done by HDwith left over cases? The engine in question is a 50FL1056 (very early 50) . The belly numbers on both halves of the cases are 249-xxxx indicating 49EL. The vin numbers/boss looks legit to me and not tampered with. I have a chance to buy the engine, just don't want to be duped. Any info is appreciated. I'll try to post a pic of the VIN when I get a chance today. Thanks

Very common, several examples have been posted here.
I'm guessing ... 249-4695 249-4744
Please tell us what it is.

kehughes!

Everything in the photo looks delightful to me.

One of my '37s with a low VIN has '36 production numbers.

You wouldn't expect them to throw last year's surplus away, would you?

Yeah it's possible to have leftover cases from '49 and they then become an early set of '50 cases. But why would the factory stamp them as FL's when they have EL belly numbers? That seems a little weird, but also weird is the high belly number, 14298. Is that high of a belly number possible for '49?

24520-48 case sets were used for 61" and 74" engines.
They needed a crankcase set pronto and they were available.

12685 panheads were made in 49. 14298-13685 =613, VIN and belly start at 1000, a few engines failed, perhaps there are 500 bikes with 49 cases.
There was a 48 WL on Ebay not long ago with 43- line bore numbers.

Those numbers are mint H-D, but I hope everyone is scared of them and I can buy it cheap!
Lots of '49s with 5 digit vins as well as belly numbers. Not quite as many as '48 though. There are also '49s out there with '48 belly numbers. As the '50s progressed the numbers of bikes built dropped dramatically. Remember that there was a major recession in the '50s. Lots of companies went belly up. H-D lost tons of market share to Brit bikes but also due to the economy. so without big production numbers the belly numbers tended to match the year of the bike.

Im going to pick it up tomorrow. The coolest thing about it to me is that my dad was born in 1950 and mom in 1956. This 50FL was the 56th bike made that year. Doesn't matter to anyone else, but is cool to me. Once again, this forum never lets me down.

I thought the picture you took of the vin was interesting, the engine shows the patina of age.
Would you please consider posting a few good pictures of the bike before you clean it. Some times a little rust dirt and oil just looks interesting.
