For 1950 model Panheads, serial numbers began at number 1000.

48 was springer, 49 is hydraglide (except for a few sidecar bikes).

And some export models!

Indian!

Are there horn mount blocks welded upon the front frame downtubes?

PS: My broken cornfield toy was found with an offset necklock springer intact, (plus top hack mount), but no "P" for 'packagetruck' behind the VIN. AMCA judges may declare such machines didn't exist, but the fossil record suggests otherwise.

i, don't know if i should even ask about the frame that came with my 1950 FL, it has the early curved top motor mount, the front tubes are not flattned, or at least don't appear to be, there are no horn blocks, its wishbone , BUT---when fitting my floorboard tabs, i found that the rear foot brake pedal bracket (42480-36 ) bolts to the frame with 5/16 bolts, not 3/8 " bolts (4293) that my parts book shows, and i was sure the 56 pan i had years ago had 3/8" bolts holding it on-----are all the brake bracket mounting bolts the same, did they change thoose when the bottom motor mount was increased in size----sorry to hi-jack but i've been following this thread--( tony schuko

Wishbone frames were used from 48 to mid 54.
48 and 54 don't have horn blocks, 49 to 53 have horn blocks.
48 frames have vertical tool box bracket.
54 frames have horseshoe tool box bracket.
All wishbone frames use 3/8" bolts for brake and clutch brackets.
Some frames have been modified and repaired through the years so they are not correct for any year.

hi guys, i checked my chassis and it has the horn mount blocks(Cotton) and the tool box is horizental(Panhead1950)!? does that mean it was a springer? or does is not, while it has a FL49' motor? chris.

Anyone know how many panheads were built in 1950? What is the last 1950 panhead VIN?

Indian,
If you have horn blocks your bike is a hydraglide. There is a short horizontal tool box bracket, the main bracket is vertical.
Please give us a day to answer.

Bart,
10265 panheads in 1950, 50FL1001 to 50FL11265.
There is discussion about vins starting at 1000 but none have been seen outside the factory.

Chris!

Please help me understand if this is your question:
Is it possible your machine was produced with a springer?

Yes.
(Even with horn blocks.)

But the overwhelming majority of 1949 machines had telescopic forks.

Indian,
Please post a photo of your bike then we can comment.
The engine aside there are quite a few differences between a 48 chassia and a 49 chassis.
The 48 has springer front end, springer handle bars, three piece spot welded fenders, the trans will have a 47 or early 48 casting date.
I have an idea but a photo would really help.
