Decifering factory frame number

OK, I seem to remember something about these but like a lot o'stuff I forgot most of it. I think it's a date code
but not sure how it works. Anybody know ?

Nope, that's a casting hallmark.
The date code would be stamped on the right side of the top motor mount, a letter and a number. Letter for month, number for year.

As bigincher said, that is a hallmark, which identifies a particular foundry. and many years had castings from more than one supplier so they can vary. Steve Little could tell you more about them.
