Will need tires

#1

Post by 1955fle » Mon Dec 10, 2012 6:56 pm

I will be needing tires for my '55 FL. It is a stock configuration and I would like to stay as close to original look as possible. The tires I currently have on the bike are approx. 25 - 30 years old and are flat where the tire tread is. What would you recommend for replacements. Also where would be the best place to purchase them?

Thanks
Carl

I used the Shinko e270 on my 56 Pan. They look great and work great. Cost is $85 each from smalltires.com

Is this the tire you are talking about Avon Safety Mileage MKII 5.00-16 Rear Tire. Did you run the same tier in the front since they are the same size?

Thanks

Although the Shinko 270 and 240s look the same, the 270 has a full aspect ratio meaning it has a taller sidewall like the original old tires. Helps with the ground clearance (about an extra half inch over the 240)

Joe

P.S looks like the Avon Safety/Milage is a full aspect ratio too so either the Avon or the Shinko 270 should do fine, the Avons are about $50 more per tire than the Shinkos

Hello everyone...new member here also with a 55 Pan. I, too, need to replace my tires this winter, and was considering
the Firestone Replicas from Coker Tire. They cost about $165.00 each plus shipping. Anyone use these? Thanks, "parts"

carl,

yes i run them on both ends. before i put another set on i want to talk to a avon rep and see if reversing the front tire mounting might help even the wear. i seem to remember from my cafe racer days that rear tires mounted in the front needed to be reversed.

parts,

welcome to the forum, i am sure the cokers are fine tires. the last time i looked i do not think they are speed rated or dot approved. that may have changed recently. more research may be needed.

yeah dittos on that joe!

full size tires for these bikes definately save on floor board and primary chain case wear! (no wonder 4 inch over forks used to be so popular!)
