Rear axle

Wanted to replace the rear sprocket on my 52 FL, couldn't get the axle out. Bike was converted to disk brake at some point. The sprocket has a bit of a dish. I guess it's a late-70's FL configuration now.
The axle went in about the length of the spacer before it got stuck.
Didn't want to wham it. What should I do?

Hi,
is it possible to nicely heat up the spacer a little bit ??
The grease will very likely boil and the sealing burn but.....

Thanks for answering Ente.
I decided I had to tap it. It came out. It wasn't the spacer. The axle was just a little tight in the bearings at certain spots. Now I have new sprockets (24 and 49 teeth) and a new O-ring chain, all for the better, since the old chain was shot and the sprockets had visible wear. Going to ride from NY city to Vermont and back soon.
