Tires opinions

I need to buy tires and know absolutely nothing about them.
The tires that I am running now are at the end of their life now---Thankfully---They were and are a dangerous tire.
Any kind of irregularity in the road--cracks, paint stripe, rutts in pavement etc.... make the bike jump.
Who can point me in the right direction for a decent highway tire. I don't care about tread or whitewall. I do care about performance, and I would like to use a non directional tire so I can rotate them without breaking them down.
Bring on the input boys and girls. I am sure there are some strong opinions out there on the subject.

i have had real good luck with avon Safety Mileage II tires. they are full size and work well in the rain.

What are you running on there now?, the last I remember it looked like a duoble stripe Goodyear Super Eagle design.

We talked about this a while back, in a wheel balance topic I think, might have been speedo gearing, can't remember.

Anyway, I think John might have the answer, the Avon "safety/mileage" seems to be a good all-around tire. Bike tires are always a trade off, they either stick real good or they last a long time, but not both. A "gummy" tire will stay glued to the pavement but it won't last long, a hard tire will last forever, but it will slide out from under you. The old
Goodyear Super Eagle Design had a center slot, I always thought that it acted just as you described, it followed every crack and tar line in the pavement surface. Even worse on a springer unless you had the dampener cranked down tight and a good shock or ride control.

I wound up with one of those Avons on the '49, literally by accident. When I hit the mother of all potholes this spring and bent the rear rim I happened to have a star-hub in the shop with that Avon on it and put it on the bike so I could pull the bent rim and relace it. Turns out that the bike rides and handles great with the Avon, but I can't say what it would do with one on the front also.

How could you go wrong with something named "Safety/Mileage"? They are non-directional but that shouldn't make any difference because they should mount the same front or back, both brake drums are on the left.

This is the tire I am running.
I do like the soft compounds better, even though they don't last as long.

sorry for the short post, i have a new puppy and he needed to go outside right away!

everything mike said plus.

being full size allows for as designed clearance on the floor boards and primary case. you can really do some shenanigins in the corners.

they also seem to do very well with the correct pressure in them. low as it may seem.

stored usually indoors my tires have shown no signs of weather checking on the side walls.

good tires in my book, and i will replace these with the same when the time comes.

Cheng-Shin 5:10 x 16. Compare the tread to your old faux Goodyear "Speed Grips". All are similar. I love these Shin tires. Cheap and good. Two words you rarely see together. Gobs of mold release left on them, so careful, they're slicker than snot for the first hundred miles, but China never made a finer tire for the price.
Get new rim strips and the big stem valve if your rim has the pre-62 big stem hole.

My current tires are Shinko By Coker.
They are SCAREY----
They follow tar lines in the road.
They follow cracks.
While changing lanes, they slingshot the bike across the tire ruts in the lanes, and if there is a joint where the lanes were built at different times, ----Hold on---
I consider myself lucky that I have not been in the rain with these tires.
I wonder if it is the square shoulder on the tire that causes this.

Do the tires that you guys recommend exhibit any of these characteristics?

I ride my Cheng-Shins over on the three ribs that run around the sidewall, in curves at 55-60 mph (once I've worn all the mold-release off of them). Sometimes I can feel my tire release a little in the apex of a curve, and I back off a little, but not too much, too fast, or it can cause the machine to rise up from a gravity squat.
I run my 5:10 x 16 tires at (26) rear and (20) psi front.
I wonder if it is the square shoulder on the tire that causes this.
Yes, is possible. The tire design past 1962 was largely "MT-90", which was a soft sidewall. "The tread was designed to stay flat on the road (like a foot) and the sidewall was the section that "gave" with the turns." - Sherman "Sherm" the H-D Oceanside dealer, 1983.

I've always used Continentals on my panheads. On my late model bikes I like Avon and the wife likes dunlop (she likes the way they say Harley Davidson on the sidewall). The conti's are a bit soft so they don't last forever but they look and handle great. I personally couldn't handle a name like cheng shin on my ride....Mike

You could spend most of a Saturday using a single edge razor blade to remove the Cheng-Shin. We called it "shaving". Problem is, if you get hurried and gouge the sidewall with the razor blade (at too steep an angle), it shows up...like a "swimming" tat and looks worse than if you'd left the name alone..
