Star hub rebuild

#1

Post by panhead_kicker » Sun Jul 19, 2009 4:27 pm

I am attempting to rebuild a late star hub. I have read the section 2C-3 on hub repair in the 1959-69 service manual. I am sure that the wheel did not come apart exactly how the exploded view diagram shows the assembly. Also on another web site I found a post mentioning that the service manual was incorrect on this. Can any one here elaborate?

Dear Panhead-Kicker,

Number 26 stays pressed in the hub.
#35 in the parts book picture.
Hope that makes a difference?

Nightshift,
That makes sense, I never got that part out and figured it probably didn't need to. But that's not what I thought was a problem. When I disasembled my hub, I am pretty sure the Roller retainer thrust washer (13 in the diagram) was positioned between the roller retainer (12) and the Thrust washer (10). The service manual shows it on the other (closed) side of the roller retainer. I think I read a post on the amca site saying that the service manual was wrong in this regard, but I am having trouble finding that post again.
This ring any bells?

Nightshift,
So my hub was correct in that regard? I'd think that would be important for folks to know. Maybe a tech bulletin was issued later to counter the service manual?

Panhead_Kicker!

Even Harley-Davidson would not print a booboo for three decades of Service Manuals and Parts Books, and in all the 45" literature, too.

The thrustwashers retain and bear opposite ends of the caged rollers.

There is some difference in the internals of the very earliest stepped hubs, but I've never had one apart.

Ok, so I can't read between the lines without my glasses <grin>, so are we saying that the diagram on 2C-3 of the service manual is correct ?

Ok, the hub has been refit and back together. (per the service manual diagram!)
I have laced the wheel and am ready to true it. This is a 16 wheel, 43006-62 stamped on the inside.
I've got all the spokes snug. While spinning the wheel what I have noticed is that the nonbrake side hub flange edge has quite a bit of run out at one point, ~3/32 in. Is this a problem with the hub that can't be corrected , or will it come out in the truing? The brake side hub flange looks good.
