Vertical play in Primary and Drive Chains

#1

Post by old man emu » Tue May 08, 2018 11:24 am

It has been suggested to me that the reason for an unusual sound coming from the side of my bike, near my left foot could be due to an incorrectly adjusted Primary Drive chain.

The manual says that the chain "should be adjusted for an overall 1/2 inch up and down free play midway between the sprockets".

My question is, Should the chain be adjusted so that the mid-point can move up 1/2" and down 1/2" (total 1 inch), or should it be 1/4" up, 1/4" down (total 1/2")?

"overall 1/2 inch up and down free play"
"overall" means "total".

Total, as in 1/4" up and 1/4" down.
The rearchain, which is longer should have 1" total.

Thanks.

Primary chain: 1/4" up + 1/4" down

Rear chain: 1/2" up + 1/2" down.
