Hot start blues

Post by King » Tue Sep 12, 2006 3:36 am

I'm baffled.
My 51FL has STD heads, Bendix carb, Andrews #1 Cam, solid pushrods, and electronic ignition. The engine was rebuilt this winter with a new top end and all new bearings in the bottom. It runs great, plenty of power and torque.
It cold starts quite well and when hot if you shut it down for a short time, say to fill with gas, it restarts first kick. But shut it down and let it sit for 5 or 10 minutes and it won't start till it cools down for at least a half hour. It will occasionally backfire through the carb but that's it.
Can anyone hazard a guess as to reasons and possible cures?

All help appreciated.

If I sit for more that a couple of min. , I give her one prime kick full choke with ign. off and then 1/4 choke with ign. on to start, it seems to work just about every time .

Is the gas in the carb boiling? I have a Shovel that used to pull this trick.

I don't know whether you carb uses a choke plate or richener, and I don't know your hot starting procedure. But,
If I had your problem, I'd disable the accelerator pump so I could try cracking the throttle when it's hot/warm.
