1957 Sportster yard find

#1

Post by Scrap » Thu Oct 05, 2017 2:44 pm

I'm picking up this bike and assorted HD big twin parts. Guy just wants it removed for free. Has been outside since a crash for 24 years.
No paper, didn't have titles back then in my state. Any guess at the value?
Thanks,
Sam

Pretty rough pile, and a lot changed from a '57. About $500 max is all I'd offer. You can recoup that in salvage parts. All the good '57 stuff is missing. Front wheel is '64 up and could be good if that rim hasn't rotted near the ground. But oil tank, gas tank, fender, etc, are all wrong for '57 anyway. Weird that they chromed the cylinders!

Robbie,
I'm getting it for free, the owner who inherited it just wants it and the assorted parts removed from the property which he is selling. It's not a project for me, I'm just trying to get an idea of what it might be worth. I was offered $500.00 based on my description from my local HD dealer who is a collector and trader. I imagine the motor has some value. Do the numbers look OK? What little I know does not appear to be a hack job. Ditto on those chrome jugs.
Thanks for the reply,
Sam

Sam, the magneto could be worth a couple hundred if it hasn't been full of water. '59 was the first year to have one. Hard to tell on the numbers, but a '57 had no provision for that type primary cover, so holes were either drilled and tapped (also added!) or those are restamped later cases. Tell him he can have it for $1000. He's a dealer, he can handle!

I'll post some photos of the rest of the parts that I'm taking out of the basement.
Thanks again,
Sam

Not a bad bunch of parts. I'd take 'em! Sportster head & trees, Tri/BSA parts, BT cylinders, L'60 swingarm & racked "65-up BT frame. Good trading parts. Doc
