Starter housing stuck to primary

#1

Post by Holtvintage » Thu Apr 04, 2019 9:51 pm

For the life of me i can't separate the starter from the inner primary. Its is a stock 1982 FLH. The service manual is pretty vague about the details. The YouTube video i watched make it look like a piece of cake ;) . The 2 bolts are removed and the jack shaft is removed. The starter housing is hitting the trans before i can clear the tranny shaft to lift up. In pictures ive seen the house separates from the primary with a gasket in between them ive tried tapping with wood and gently prying. Ive tried to drive a plastic wedge between but its tight to the primary case. Every thing else is loose and free. Grrrrrrrr. Are they typically stubborn to separate? It should be just 2 bolts that hold the housing to the primary case or am i just blind? Thanks

The right end of the starter motor usually has a support bracket down to the kicker cover. Also, I don't see the pinion spur gear that is part of the starter motor's main shaft, is it broken off? And another thing, I haven't touched my '68 Shovel lately, but I usually remove the starter and the offset gear housing as an assembly. Correct me if I'm wrong on that count.....
Ans, since you are down this far, why not just remove the primary, disconnecting the hoses from the right of the MC rather than trying to remove them from the inner primary?

Im trying to remove the inner primary to replace my secondary belt. The starter housing is keeping the primary case from being able to come straight off. Ive seen the primary case removed with the starter being completely assembled and installed in the frame. Only the 2 top bolt that attach the jackshaft portion to the primary are removed. Those 2 bolts are accessible from the right side of the bike with a long extension

I would be ecstatic if I could remove the whole starter and housing as one or better yet not remove the starter at all

I feel that the housing ( the grey aluminum portion in photo )should come loose at the point where it meets the primary case ( black painted portion ) with the jack shaft removed and the 2 bolt removed ( the 2 empty holes in the ears ) . Is there more bolts? It doesn't specify in my manual.

It looks to me that you have the offset starter drive housing still attached to the back side of the inner primary.

As stated, the HOUSING bolts need to come out. The starter and housing just sit in place when the primary comes off. Is there a bolt to the offset housing inside the primary? Some models had one.

I had to sleep on it and come back with a fresh mindset. I had to accept that the starter had to be pulled out of the way at least, and the house portion disassemble. Here is the break down photos.

#1. Photo Shows the starter motor removed which gives access to a single allen bolt on lower portion. Removing this bolt lets the 2 halves of the offset housing separate.

#2 photo shows the gear which simply pulls out and gives access to 2 Phillips screws the hold the housing to the outside of the primary case.

So, you did get it apart? You say you have a rear belt drive, so what year and model are these parts?
