Panhead Cylinder Heads on Shovelhead Cylinders

#1

Post by michigander52 » Thu Jul 26, 2018 9:26 pm

For my S&S alternator/generator cases I'm installing a set of S&S 4 1/4" flywheels and want to use 80" Shovelhead cylinders. I want to use Panhead type heads that fit Shovelhead cylinders. I'm looking at the STD Panheaad/Shovelhead Performance heads but am wondering if anyone else makes a head that will fit. The STD heads are a little pricey. S&S has their P series heads but it looks like they have to be used with their retro conversion kit which also requires a different cam.
Has anyone here done this before and which heads did you use?

Steve

Not sure but I think STD is the only way to go…

You will need the Pan/Shovel heads with external oiling.

I am using these heads on my Pan as at first they where the only one made by STD . These are very high quality products.

Thanks for the reply Gunny, Do you know if they have the same performance as Shovelhead heads? I've never had a Panhead before so don't know their difference in caricaturists but as I understand people used to put Shovelhead heads on their Panheads to increase the performance. I would hate to pay a lot of money for an under performing head.

All the STD Pan heads use the biggest Shovelhead intake valves and for those you'r concerned by also the Shovelhead manifold as well Shovelhead exhaust flanges so you won't loose anything

I know I’m a little late here but I have a set of S&S heads available.
PM me if you’re still interested in going that route.

STD Pan heads and Shovel heads are basically identical internally EXCEPT for the Pan vs Shovel rocker arm ratios. The Pans rockers are 1.5 and the Shovels' are 1.43 so the Pans' rocker give more valve lift and you must take this into consideration when choosing a cam. I'll not go into detail it is basic hot rod engine building and you should already know this, or else get on the interweb and educate yourself. Of course one can always pay somebody else to set up your heads, but then what will you learn doing that other than your wallet is lighter..... RooDog
