Wrist Pin Clip, please help

#1

Post by Pete808 » Sun Mar 10, 2019 12:46 am

Is there a special trick or technique on how to get these clips on the wrist pins? These little stinkers are tough to get on. Any help would be appreciated before I lose my mind and break something and delay this any further. :D

They are very difficult without the special too. It expands them over a taper and pushes them on without distorting them. A tool is fairly easily made but care must be taken getting them on and they must be tight on the pin when installed properly.

This is what the factory tool looks like. The larger part is a hollow sleeve that pushes the clip on the taper, the OD of the taper matches the OD of the pin.

Figures why I can't get it on. At the time I posted this I was at work and I went downstairs to the service department and asked one of the mechanics to help me out. He was baffled but said to leave it with him for a bit and he will figure it out. I went downstairs about 2 hours later and he said he made a tool for me to make it work. Here is the tool, pretty impressed that he did that since he does not have much knowledge of these old bikes. It is a similar concept to the tool you posted. He put the clip on one side and said I can take the tool home and do the other sides. Just slide the clip over the machined tapered thing and slide the plastic sleeve over and turn the nut. Works like a charm. Thanks for the pic of the actual tool. I think he will feel good knowing that his tool is similar to what HD designed.

Very Nice!!!!
Now, you guys at home could to the same thing at home using a piece of all-thread and an old wrist pin, or tubing, ground down to a tapper and polished, and unless you plan on doing many more of these obsolete wrist pins in the future, that should suffice. I made my own more years ago than I care to think about, and I surely don't miss those L shaped devils.....
