Pete, just look at the bottom cup placement, that will indicate whether it's a baby bull, or a real bullie.
A late '47 frame has no bullneck at all....
Pete, how high is the VIN?

Here are some pics of the neck and the VIN. the cases were painted black years ago. Should I bead blast that off or just use a chemical stripped? And after I get the black paint off do I have to paint it silver or will it not rust as is?

What exactly is a bull neck? I have the palmer's book but I don't know what I'm looking at.

That is a late 47 neck.

A bullneck has as lot of casting material at the rear of the bottom cup, the cup actually looks like it is recessed in the neck. Someone will come along with an idea of when the late 47 frame was put into production.

That late frame is correct on your Knuckle. Good to have. The transition was in the late 7000s of production.
Here is a bullneck and a '41-early '46 pre bullneck, the bullneck is the second pic. Some versions have a much more pronounced step.

Awesome, thanks for the replies. Looks like I have a pretty good base to start with, let's see what it looks like when it arrives.

I have a 47FL 12>>> motor with that very late year frame and nov 47 tranny, i think there was 2 47 style tanks made early had no dimples under the tank and later has 2 dimples under on left side witch is what i have.
i believe there was 3 different frames for 47 well forgings aside from the bull neck neck with xe35 over 12 then the xe35 with 13 on other side
your frame from picture looks like a late frame by the picture, seems to me you need a bullneck

Robbie,
47EL3253 is an early 47 knuckle and likely came with a bullneck frame.
i think there was 2 47 style tanks made early had no dimples under the tank and later has 2 dimples under on left side witch is what i have.
Three types of 47 tanks have been reported.
Early and mid smooth left tank bottom.
Late pan indents on left tank
Very late pan indents left tank, plug on right tank for pan fuel connector.
Some early 48's have plug on right tank for knuckle fuel connector.

scored some awesome 47 tanks. Got a great deal too, I think. They should arrive in 10 days, I'll post pics when they do.

Pete my man, all great descriptions, but as written, define a objective. How correct do you want it, then shoot for that goal. Early pan tanks work also, I have seen and known men who cut the right gas feed feed and move in closer to be correct, but that's a horse of a diffrent color.
Enjoy, enjoy..

There's a certain wonderful feeling that comes with acquiring a super nice, year correct, excellent shape major component when you're trying to make everything as it left the factory. Sometimes the price isn't so important...

Yes, fox emblems. The price was very good. The buyer actually had some sellers remorse after we agreed on a price. He received offers almost twice what we agreed on a day later but he kept his word and shipped them at our agreed price. Good guy up in the Boston area.
