Front motor mount with no hole

#1

Post by Holtvintage » Sun Jul 01, 2018 10:39 pm

I was looking at a picture of a set of knucklehead cases yesterday . I noticed that the front left mount looked fine as in no repairs but it didn't have a bolt hole through it. Just soild. It seems to me that it has to be a old repair but I couldn't see any signs of weld. Just didn't know if anyone had ran across this. Thanks

It looks clean. It has decent belly numbers and the vin looks good as well. Something else I noticed is no wear Mark's on bottom of the mounts. Reat mounts have 7 stamped on the top . Fl in the vin

Does the vin font typically match belly numbers font? These do not . The 6 9 are not straight back on belly but the vins are correct straight on a 47 year

I checked the gallery and saw that belly fonts doesn't necessarily match vin font but the no hole has me puzzled

My vote's for a nicely done repair. Some inconsistencies, Smooth bottom's to both mounts, but what might be ovality to the one hole that is there, maybe some tiny pits in the aluminum from a repair in the blanked ear...
But there would be no good reason for the factory to send out an engine that got as far as being assigned a serial number that couldn't be mounted in a chassis :D

That is not a set of matched cases, belly numbers are different. Could be a replacement case on one side.

Agreed. Waiting on a picture of casting date code now. Vin is a 47 and belly is stamped 47. There is a 7 stamped on rear mount so I'm confident that it is a factory case. I'm not sure if replacement cases were stamped with 7 on rear mount

First photo below is a pair of replacement Knuckle cases both cast in Dec 47. No SN and no BNs, just 43 on each half to identify them as a matched set. Compare the front edge of the left case with the eBay left case.

December 1947 has 43.jpg

Next is a replacement Knuckle left case cast in Jan 48. No SN and no BN, just 105 on the bottom. Again compare the front of the case.

I’m wondering if the eBay case was repaired and the hole was not drilled because the owner had not decided what frame was going to be used.

Regarding characters in BNs and SNs, styles often do not match. The 6/9 in the BNs on the eBay cases appear to be the normal round-back type for 1947. H-D used several different styles of round-back 6/9 in BNs over the years.

BTW, if you have Bruce Palmer’s 37–64 SE you’ll notice on page 10 he says ‘any style stamp’ was used for BNs. But that is incorrect in the extreme. Yes, some BN stamps were often different to those used for the accompanying SN but they were not just any style. As happened with SN characters, BN characters changed at times and we can track them to help ID cases and to help determine if BNs appear authentic or not.

Thanks for the feedback. I do have palmer's book. It invaluable for most things but suprising he was vague on a few others. I would have to agree with you about it being a repair. At least it's a clean looking repair. casting codes on left and right are 47's. They will make a good bobber set . Thanks again

Some of the current repop Knuckle cases from Germany have a date code and unfinished motor mounts...

I think that is scandalous. I seen repop of the early models with the casting code on the outside.
