Footboard rubber number/letter

#1

Post by kehughes » Sat Mar 15, 2014 2:32 am

Has anyone ever figured out what the letter and number on the footboard rubbers signifies? It's not in Palmer's and I've searched but never seen an explanation.

Not easy to find, Folks!

But one of my old pads has them in the upper right-hand "corner".
I hope this photo works, as I won't be able to view it until I return home this evening:

It certainly resembles a date code, but for now, the are just more Elephino numbers to me.

My 48 Pan has NOS rubbers fitted , that I bought in the 70's.
They are numbered B-1 and B-3.
42 Military U has original , used rubbers. One shows scuffed/ un readable then -1 , other has no letter or number ...

I have pairs that say A-8 , B-7, A-4, and one that is definitely old, has a canvas bottom and has the Made in USA but has no letter/number. To my knowledge, no one made repops until more recently with the Made in USA and canvas bottoms. Did some originals not have the letter/number combo?

As some may know I'm trying to finish my '50 and I picked out the best two rubbers I had, but as luck would have it , one is an "A" and the other a "B". What do you guys think? Would you match them up (already have an "A" on the left side) and put another poorer looking "A" on the right or mismatch and use the good "B" rubber on the right?

and really not sure if it should be A or B............

and cotten..........what is eliphino???....just an ole' country boy here.. went way over my head ....lol!

good conversation guys, thanks for the feedback.

I'm guessing wildly, Jan 48, Feb 57, Jan 54

Jerry ,

all I'ver ever seen is an A or a B. Never a C,D, etc... And I don't think rubbers were only made in January and February each year. So then I thought maybe the number was the month. But I've also never seen a double digit number(10, 11, or 12) ... So I don't know .. We need some completely original paint, non restored bikes to document.

And cotten, got it . That's pretty good, never heard it before.

I personally don't think they mean anything related to dates. More likely mold numbers and a way for inspectors to determine a problem. If the part comes through screwed up, check that mold number.
I have NOS ones that I have had since the 70s when I bought them new. Numbers are A-7 and A-8. I have originals with other A and B numbers on original parkerized boards. I place no importance on them for correctness. Besides the fact that they were a wear item and regularly replaced...

I am thinking that Robbie is correct that they are molding #s . I am going to go with the two best rubbers I have.
