Tank paint

#1

Post by bangkokbob » Tue Dec 09, 2014 8:45 am

Hi all.
Attached are 3 pics of my tanks. I'm baffled as to wether they are original painted or not.
If they are repainted they have been done at least 40 years ago in a 64 scheme.

Painters are not so clean and leave tell tales of there presence but these have nothing.
Under paint looks to be parkerised or slight rust where paint has been chipped or scratched from the past.
It looks as good a finish on the backs of the tanks as well.

So I thought I'd throw it at the forum for something a bit different.
Regards, B.B.

Bangkokbob---I am no expert when it comes to paint!-(I know factory colors somewhat)-Anyway whoever did the job was a good painter no-doubt!.I mean 40-yrs. & there looking fine. But I think that OEM tanks where the emblem is attached to should have a indent that looks like the emblem, with tapped screwholes for the emblem. Those emblems seem raised above the tank!-Like mine.-& I have aftermarket tanks from 1981.However Im not sure if all the OEM tanks Had the relief for the emblem????--Im sure RUBONE or ADAM or Mike would have the CORRECT years & models for you.---Respectfully---RICHIE

I have several tanks of that vintage and there is no relief in the tank for the emblems . Those really look clean , it must not have been ridden much as I see no sign of heat stressed paint on the inner areas close to the engine .

I don't know if this will help, but it may raise a few more questions :) .
Is that grey primer that shows in the chipped spots?
Most of my experience is with older stuff. Having said that, I don't remember seeing or having heard of the Factory using grey primer on any of their paintwork.
What does the paint look like at the filler neck, under the gas caps?
The '57 - '62 tanks had the emblem recess.

Thanks for the info. I'll take a snap of each filler neck and post it up. They are just metal under where there paint has come off.

bkb.
After looking at all of your tank pictures including the last ones of the filler necks, I believe you've got a set of nicely repainted tanks :) .
I base that opinion not just on what I see at the necks (which definitely looks like a repaint) but it also appears that on the left side tank (and probably the right side too) at the rear mount hole for the 5/16" stud there is a place where it looks like it was smoothed up, possibly from a repair (but not necessarily), prior to the present finish being applied.
