Handlebar pull throttle

#1

Post by theo » Sun Nov 10, 2013 1:33 pm

Hello,

I have 2 questions about the handlebar I recently bought.

I have a 1956 pan and I have bought a handlebar that I was told to be original for my bike.
I thought it would be a push throttle but it isn't. As you can see in the pictures the spiral of the sleeve pulls the cable outwards.
So this is a pull throttle?
Is this a normal/original set up for this bike?

The second thing is the routing of the throttle cable to the carburator.
I currently have a bracket attached to the upper engine mount (just behind the air filter) which holds the outer cable of my current external throttle.
I don't think this is a original bracket, and the current cable has a sharpe curve in it because there is not a lot of space between the airfilter and the bracket.

The new cable is a lot less flexible and I am afraid the throttle won't turn so easy if I attach it to this bracket.
Where is this cable supposed to be mounted?

Please forgive me my ignornace about the subject, this is new to me.

Thank you for your response.

Theo

The bracket you show is designed for a pull type ( English style as they used to be called ) external throttle cable with stranded wire inner. A solid wire cable will not flex to fit nor would it likely be long enough. the solid core standard cables came in along the lower neck strut and were push type with no return springs or extra linkage. Internal controls that pull are commonly used on Zenith/Bendix type carbs.
The picture in the first post shows the standard factory method of cable routing to the carb

Thank you for your response.

If i understand correctly this is not a original handlebar and not made to fit a linkert carburator.
That is a disappointment.

I do want to run with this handlebar because the current one doesn't look that great and the model doesn't handle well.

Are there brackets available to make this fit?

Thanks.

Ok, Richie. Will you please explain why you say those handlebars are aftermarket? They look like the real deal to me. They might be too shiny to be original, perhaps they are from Faber. But I still would like to hear your explanation on how you identify them as aftermarket, if you don't mind.

Theo,
The carb control coil bracket that you have is a aftermarket bracket that is marketed to folks who desire to run the more "modern" style handlebars and pull type throttle control. Robby mentions the term "English" throttle; those type of pull throttles were standard on British bikes like Triumph and BSA long before Harley switched over to them. The bracket you have on there now is designed to reverse the operation of the Linkert and change it from "push" to "pull".

That is a nice set of bars and spirals that you have, and basically, all you need to do to make them work is to re-route your control coil (throttle cable), use the proper bracket to anchor the the outer jacket of the cable, and change the the way the throttle wire attaches to the lever on the carb. I believe that the '56 had a tab welded to the underside of the frame bar (just above the front head) where the outer jacket of the cable is anchored. I'm sure you could also use an earlier control coil bracket that attaches at the upper motor mount bolt as a solution that doesn't require welding if by chance your frame no longer has the original mounting tab on the frame.

Geo.

Richie, I really need to understand why you say these are repop. What do see that identifies them as repop? Help us all to understand how you can make that statement, please.

Thank you for the response.

The handlebar looked aged when i got it but i had it re chromed.
That explains why it looks shiny.
I have mounted the new handlebar this afternoon and it looks a lot better than the other one.
I have routed the cable under the tanks and tried fitting it to the excisting bracket where the old cable was attached (why not give it a try).
I was surprised to see that this fitted easily and the inner cable moves properly.
I guess the curve in the cable near the carburator is not such a problem.

I am still curious if it is original or not?

Thanks again.

If you are referring to the bracket bolted to the top motor mount, then no, it is not original nor is the spring on it. Most likely the top plate on the carb shaft bracket is not either. That was a kit sold since the fifties to convert the throttle as was said in previous posts by me and others.
As was also said, if it works for you and you like it, then fine, use it. If you do not like it or you want the linkage to be as originally designed, then it needs to go away.
