63-65 tanks

#1

Post by [josh] » Sun Jun 18, 2017 5:31 pm

What is the correct location for these badge mounts? I have been researching for an upcoming paintjob. I have been finding that some mounts appear more centered up and down on the sides of the tanks, and others seem lower towards the bottom of center on the sides of the tanks. To make things more interesting, my matching set of tanks have noticeably different badge mount locations.

Badge mounts are spot welded in tank recess, this is original - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Panhead-1965-5- ... aj&vxp=mtr

Is there a possibility that the 3.5 gal and the 5 gal mounts are in different areas. My question wasn't if they were authentic, it was on differences in location of the mounts. I will post up some examples when I have a moment. Thanks for the reply.

Might have something to do with foot-shift or hand-shift. The emblem may be lower on a hand-shift to make room for the shift gate. It's all I can think of.....

All '63-'65 tank emblems are in the same location. H-D never mounted emblems different for hand or foot shift in any year. The 5 gallon '65 tanks look a bit different because the tank is different. I have a pair of factory tanks if you need measurements. The mounting strip is the same from '63 through the end of screw on emblems in the '70s.

If it mattered to me, I would search for an earlier post where you state otherwise.
But it doesn't. So I won't.

I have never stated otherwise. Perhaps you should find it so you can actually read what I said about tank mounting strips. Specifically in regard to the difference between '54 and '55-'56 tanks which people often mistake for one another. All three of those years use the same mount, but '55-'56 are lower on the tank due to the new "Victory" emblems used, which would not clear a shift gate if mounted on '54 tanks. That has zero to do with hand or foot shift on any year, it has to do with mounting the wrong emblems on the wrong tank.

So search away........

Sent Rubone an email. Having problems with photobucket. Perhaps he can get the pic up.

searched for the earlier "otherwise" post, I did not find what I was looking for. Still uncovering facts and hoping for some measurements.

Thanks!
The tank on the right looks to be lower with the emblem mount. The fancy two tone paint is what I am going for on my project.

Josh,
As I told you in the email, the mounts appear correct in location and the difference in appearance is due to the different shape of the tank due to engine clearance in the tank forming. And also as I said the distance from the filler neck to top of emblem is the same on both tanks. These are stock factory tanks.

Thanks! its much clearer now. I just need to see a pic of the shorter tank with the twotone. Research continues. Thanks for the help, all.

Which Two-Tone? Each year from '63-'65 is different..
