Pepper Red ?

#1

Post by drinner-okc » Tue Feb 13, 2018 1:59 am

I'm needing motivation. My next project is a pile of parts into a representation of a 53 FL in Pepper Red. If anyone has pics they could & would post of a Pepper Red Hydra-Glide, I'd print them & hang around the garage. I borrowed a dash & took to the paint store. They zapped it with the ray gun (spectrometer or what ever it is called) and it identified it as GM Light Red.
I had a 78 Chevy pickup that color, alone it was red, park next to a red Ford and it was orange!
It won't be a Points bike, but a rider. Safety bead rims, greasable Star covers, 12V.

Thanks in advance!

You might also try snooping around John Pierces website, ColorRight. Maybe you can find a photo suitable for borrowing and hanging on the wall, like I did, for much the same reason as you.

Check out pages 2 and 3 of my gallery, the best way to describe the color is a reddish "chevy engine orange". When i did my bike i used real Dupont Dulux, unfortunately unavailable today due to lead content.

My paint supplier at the time described it as a fleet color called "Omaha orange".

IIRC, the color was also described as late 60s Ford Red. I've seen it called Spitfire Red, too. It's a nice color, and really lights up in direct sunshine. H-D used the color again in the early 60s with a different name.

Yeah JohnHD, that's what I need is pics of complete bikes. I've already bought the GM Lt Red, and the painter has painted the tanks, and repaired and painted the Oil Tank (black) (he had limited access to a hot tank to clean them inside and then wanted to seal them).
That's where the motivation is needed, if I can look at pics of running/riding bikes I'll be more likely to stay home & work.
This is the first time in my life I start a riding season with 2 running bikes (2012 Road king & 65 Electra Glide). I've been saving for frame repairs, and I'm ready to take it to him. He's 'retired' & works when it fits him. He likes these odd vintage jobs.
He did my (65) heads last year & we begged him to do all the top end machining on another 65. He would not change the oil on an Evo or Twinkie. He's been there done that & burned the shirt!
I just want to look at bikes with different options, I may go bare naked, everything else is dressed-out. but I have bags & a windshield. I'm pretty sure it'll have turn signals, maybe dual element bulbs for marker lights.

I got a sample of the original pepper red, and had it matched pretty close using a House of Colors chart, I have the bike apart but I'll try to load pictures

they ALL look sharp ! I'm really leaning toward bare naked looking at these. my fenders are drilled for bags, but the acorn nuts have just the right bling. the bags would install in a few minutes anyway. It's a tank shift, and I'll probably not take passengers on it.

anyone opposed to me printing these pics and pinning on my walls ?

Thanks!

The 'motivational' material displayed on my wall is a pair of factory photos (left & right side) blown up to 20"x30" poster size and framed. Although they are black & white, they are great as reference material when it comes to fine details of fit and finish.
I spend a fair amount of time just standing there studying the photos.

That color looks like extremely similar to the Pepper Red I had my 57 FL painted about 10 years ago. That 56 is gonna be an eye popper...

Thanks, but actually it a Heinze 57, the frame is '57, the tanks and rear fender are"56, front fender I think is '59, motor '52, trans '48, the neck was stretched out to about 40deg., I had to replace the neck and most the front half of the frame and sidecar loops, the front head is out in Bloomsburg getting repaired, hopefully I'll have it back together in about three weeks, I'll post some pictures, Whitey
