Transmission Oil Seal

#1

Post by nan00k » Mon Apr 22, 2019 8:09 am

got a leak on tranny mainshaft and want to have all necessary bits in hand when I do the job instead of waiting around while parts are shipped. after consideration I think my transmission is earlier than the '65 motor.
the knowledge base suggests an upgrade by having the 'hat' spacer machined to accept #029 viton 'O' rng, my Q is what thickness ring as i can see them 0.07 - 1.78mm thick.

thanks

There is a date code on the body of the tranny case.
The spacer behind the sprocket needs to be clean, no grooves.

Been looking into this, the oil seal locates om the maindrive gear behind splines and the spacer fits over, don't know have the misinformation of the spacer being machined found it's way onto knowledge base.

Mike,

If nan don't want it, can I be next inline for it?

George

PS, it would be for a spare transmission that I am building.

Sorry George, it's gone, but if your main drive gear fits the mainshaft correctly, and you don't over fill your tranny, it won't leak:)

Thanks for the offer Pan' but having stripped down I found missing cork oil seal behind large oil seal so with that being replaced and new fangled what looks like double lipped oil seal fingers X'd all will be good.
If it comes to it I will have my spacer machined to take 'O' ring, does anyone know what diameter section to use for the 'O' ring?.
Usual opportunity to replace shonky parts when doing the job and hardest part was resetting mouse trap, what does that say about my mechanical apptitude 8P.
ps how often is the small key that locks the spacer to rotate with the mainshaft left out?.

.

Famous "left over" part. Usually found on floor AFTER the primary covers are bolted down.
