Panhead engine buying question

#1

Post by Newbie » Thu Apr 21, 2005 6:49 pm

What exactly should I look for when going over an engine for sale? I am looking at a '48FL that has been fully rebuilt. The cases are in good shape, I only see a fixed spot where the front bolt mounts in. The fins look real good too. The exhaust spigots also look real good. Where is the right side engine case number and should it match the left side vin number? How easy it to check the head numbers? Anything else to look for? Also, what is the approximate value of such an engine? Thanks for all the help.

Newbie-

There is no Right case VIN. But underneath are, "Belly #'s for both cases. 1 on each case half..
Original condition they match each other. But are different than the VIN's. The case Vin's should read 48FLXXXX = 74" or 48ELXXXX =61"

The"head numbers" are between the pushrods at the underside of each head. These will read the year...

(1) other thing you should consider, take an experienced HD friend that knows Pans. That would be IMHO the best thing. Extra trained eyes on it!!

Good Luck..
