Is this a good deal on this 53 panhead?

The guy has agreed trade my #'s matching 68 Triumph bonneville chopper and $4300 cash.
Not really hot on the red stuff but thats an easy fix... The motor was rebuilt 800 miles ago. 53 numbers matching title. Not trying to rip the guy off or make money on it. Just make it my own and keep it.

Dear Luke,

Have read the receipts for the fresh overhaul?

Will the builder extend his warranty to you?

Theres nice pieces and parts on the Pan, but your trumpet is going up in value quicker than piles of Pan and Sportster and Shovel parts.

'53 numbers? With a '66-'69 style right case and cam cover? It also looks like it may have an electric start left case as well. If that front drive pulley is on a spline those cases are bogus. I would definitely take a close look at that VIN. If he has all the receipts for the engine work and the cases are good it would be an OK deal. If those cases are not correct, walk away quickly. What are the belly numbers and do you have a photo of the VIN?

The guy got it on a trade. Real cool guy. No receipts or warranty.

How can I tell if its an electric start left case? So basically it looks like shovelhead cases...?
Will a 53 left case not meet up with a 66-69 right case?

There's no relay mount on the right case half. I would be checkin the belly #'s for sure as well as the VIN. Can ya send some close-up pics of the engine including the # boss?....bosheff

Luke,
A '53 case could be mated to a '66 type case but it would be sort of counterproductive. The right case would have the biggest version of the main bearings and the drive side the smallest. Not the best combo. Do a little more research on it. More photos and closeups of the left case, VIN, and those elusive belly numbers. If he is not cool with it, he doesn't need your cash, you do! As far as the rebuild goes, with no documentation he better be your brother or a saint, because word of mouth means zilch! There are tons of stories out there of the "newly rebuilt" bike that is a POS. The difference is thousands of dollars! The best advice I can give is patience. More guys get burned by the need for instant gratification than anything else!

So does the left case not look original from the pics? Or the frame?

I asked for more pics. Dude has no computer. He emailed me from his work.

The guy got back to me matching belly numbers are 1 67 3305

This means these are 67 shovel cases right... That someone stamped with a 53 VIN.

The belly #'s and what I can see from the pic's would lead me to believe that these were indeed 67 shovel cases. But considering the VIN is bogus, why would you believe anything else this guy is tellin ya is the truth. It has been my experience that as many times as not, people tryin to sell these crooked motorcycles really don't know shit from gooseberry jam when it comes to VIN"s, motorcases, belly #'s, and the actual year it should be titled LEGALLY. This still does not excuse a seller from pumpin a smoker to the unsuspecting buyer. If it were me and I thought I still wanted this unit, I would offer considerably less for the motorcycle to cover the cost of replacing the cases, labor included, and see if he bites. Your trumpet and $4300 is to much in my opinion even if it were a square deal and the cases were right. At this point this pan is no more than a pile of assembled parts that could land you and/or the motorcycle in the slammer. See what he wants for it minus the engine, or minus the engine cases. Of course the title, legal or not would still go with the cases, but ya might be able to score a sweet deal on the roller. Looks to me like he's just tryin to unload a funky piece and take your trade with a pile of $'s....bosheff

i agree, pass on this one. you do not need the potential trouble a felonious set of cases could cause.
