Post by Robert Luland » Sun Apr 04, 2010 3:12 pm

May be some one can help me here. Is there a list of factory quantity production numbers some where? I got to have fifty books on Harley-Davidson and no were can I find this info or I'm just missing it. Mainly 48-60. I can't believe I can't find this in Palmer's bible. Thanks, Bob L

The factory production numbers are published in The Legend Begins, a book that apparently is out of print. I photocopied some pages from this book that I borrowed that may be what you are looking for. Send me a message to pan50head@gmail.com and I will send you a pdf of the pages I copied. Can't seem to attach a pdf file to this reply.

IIRC, the book "The Legend Begins Harley Davidson Motorcycles 1903- 1969 " gives the production numbers.

There is also a book titled "Harley-Davidson Data Book" by Rick Conner, first published in 1996 by MBI Publishing Company in Osceola Wisconsin in 1996. It has production totals broken down by model and year for most of the years from 1903 to 1996. I can't vouch for the accuracy but it has a lot of information in it.

Here is a scan of one of the 1958 pages showing how the data is presented.

Thanks Mike you beat to the punch. I went back into my library again. I don't have that book but I did find something I didn't even know I had. The Harley-Davidson Data Book by Rick Conners. It lists the production numbers by type. I added them all up for 1957 and the total is 13079 units. Does that sound right? Seems low in my head. Bob L

My source shows the same number total production for 1957. This number is reasonably consistant with production numbers from 1950 through 1960....bosheff

I wish there was a data base or a book that you could look up your vin number and find out what color your bike came out with, the options that came with it and any other info the factory had when it was made. That would be a very interesting read

The question is if that information is available. I'd be happy to host the database.

I read on another site a while ago that Harley did at one point keep track of all the production numbers and accompanying options but apparently all of the information was thrown into a dumpster years ago. I too would love to have the type of information. I belong to some antique machinery forums and I was able to find out the factory fresh information for a 1942 South Bend lathe including the original delivery destination and all options....pretty neat stuff. Here's hoping that someone resurrected that Harley information at some point and we can find it somewhere.

Has anyone ever seen SideCar production numbers?
Just wondering. I imagine it was just a small fraction of bike production.

ONE VERY IMPORTANT THING ABOUT HARLEY PRODUCTION NUMBERS IS THIS. During the late 1970's the factory realized it did not have a list of production numbers. John Harley asked his secretary, Midge Kimball, to find them. Midge went to the president's report to the stockholders and found numbers. BUT!!!! These numbers were for calendar year production and not year model production. So for instance if you look at 1956 you will actually be seeing the last part of the 1956 production and the first part of the 1957 production. The figures may be close, but not exact.

Dear Chris,
I almost met John once. Willy G came in and looked around but John stayed out with the bikes.

Its hard to make a good impression,
