1960 FLH Intake Manifold Clamps?

#1

Post by pistol pete » Fri Aug 16, 2013 3:30 am

Can some tell me if the attached photo is original intake manifold clamps for a 1960 FLH. Been having intake leak problems lately and thought I'd replace my o-rings and clamps. Was using an Aircraft style clamp, but it was a cheap after market so I think that's my problem. Tried to find original style clamps on line with no luck, so I started digging around the garage and found the clamps that were on the '60 pan when I bought it in '78 (Glad I never throw anything motorcycle related away). They almost look homemade, but they're a perfect fit and easy install. Funny thing though, one is .75" wide and the other is .5" wide.

Pistolpete!---any clamp that's wide is trouble!--Even the ones that come with carb.-kits,etc.---those clamps you have a pic. of are way to much for a intake .There not even bent for a nice even pull when you start tightening them-up & start looking for bubbles with the bottle.Try old-dude or 45-parts depot,--Get the VITON O-rings to!--If your running regular black ones Todays fuel with corn squeezins eats em up & that may be why you cant get a seal!.I know guys that are using 2-piece clamps with success!--I believe the Factory ones are bent slightly at the bolt & are a 10/32-thread.---respectfully---Richie

pete,

those clamps are oem and will work, remember they just need to seal the assembly. the carb is held up by the support under the carb, so monster clamps are not needed.

plus one on the james viton o rings, they sell a nice kit with the o rings and insulator block with all the gaskets. regular o rings always failed for me in less than a year. going on 4 years now with the james set.

Those look like stock intake manifold clamps to me. I think the 55s and maybe 56s, had a more narrow version, though.
Either the factory or aftermarket SS clamps will do the job.

I hear ya VPHD!---But whats-up with that much difference in width on the clamps?---Maybe a mismatch sometime in its life ,cause It would be a real bitch getting the manifold on!--It will go on obviously!,I was just wondering if it was stock from the MOCO that way?--& if not I would use 2-of the same anyway. So is it from the factory or somebody fooled with it over the yrs.--The reason I ask ,he said these are the originals he pulled-off. Its not a big-deal,unless you have a complete original. Also I like the originals they tighten-up easily & the pressure is distributed in a circle cause of the angle the stock clamps have.--They olny stop the bubbles-(leak)-& should not be tightened any more then that!--I like a few hot & cold cycles before giving a bike back to its owner!--Sometimes itll start bubbling on you & a Full turn most of the time cures the leak.--CARB.--SUPPORT is so crucial to these o-ring seals.---RICHIE 8)

Thanks all for the fast replys. Guess I shouldn't have replaced them in the first place, They're in pretty good shape and will cleanup nice. They look like something I can make with some stainless steel band. Think I'll give it a try this weekend.
Thanks again
Pete

Pete!

I have been led to believe that '55-'56 used the narrow straps, and '57-'76 used the wide.

Stainless will probably be pretty tough to work through the "buckle".

When "correct" is not an issue, common catalog stainless clamps with #10 fasteners work well,

although they often need .030" (.76mm) ground off of their width (especially for sportsters and shovelheads).

Cotton,

Thanks. Gonna try and run is the ones pictured. I believe they'll be OK. By chase, how can I get my hands on one of your floats?

Thanks
Pete

Pete!

Your clamps may well work fine, but please bubble-test for certainty.

For machined floats and other carburetor services, please email me direct at liberty@npoint.net.

I appreciate your interest,

My 59 has clamps like the ones pictured but both are the narrow clamps.

In case anyone wants to order oem clamps, i found them at:

http://latus-harley-davidson.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

Part #27063-57. One clamp per "kit". 3/4" wide comes unclamped and with the screw...

Cheers
