Gas Cap

#1

Post by ozwick86 » Sat Oct 20, 2007 5:56 pm

Are the gas caps for my 59 pan the "tall" or "short" variety. The part number in the book indicates 61103-36 for both the left and right side, and are vented. I see a lot of different caps on Ebay and would like to get the correct replacement type. Also, would the brand be Eaton or ?

Possibly looking to replace the repops on my bike.

Thanks!

oswick, look at the vapour lock in linkert thread viewtopic.php?f=71&t=1723" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and on page one Cotten has posted pictures of an original Eaton gas cap (on the left), and a aftermarket one on the right. On the original ,you can just make out the Eaton hallmark at one end of the bayonet (bottom leg) which is -- EATON in a banner surrounded by a circle. I believe that for your 59, the short caps are the ones you want. They are vented and have the hallmark at one end and not the center of the bayonet. Really good ones on eBay can easily go for 100 bucks, but you can find used ones for less. Just look for the hallmark at the end of the bayonet for the correct caps. Eaton was the OEM manufacturer for many years.

If you have or can reference "How to restore you Harley-Davidson" by Palmer you will see a complete description of the caps including the measurements. This book is an invaluable reference that I and many others cannot do without.

I have been watching quite a few on Ebay but need to watch the finances at this moment.

I will definitely buy them from Ebay when the time comes.

Thanks!
