carb support

#1

Post by socalrider » Sat Jun 27, 2009 10:31 pm

where do you support the carb on a 65 flh? i know that the factory method is to support from the bottom of the float bowl to the case bolt between the lifter blocks. would'nt that pull the carb down when the cylinders expand, and in turn cause a intake manifold leak? i would think that the support bracket would have to mount in a location that would not hold the carb and manifold assembly against cylinder expansion. the only location i can see that would meet that requirement is the head bolts. has anyone out there dealt with this issue?

Dear SoCalRider,

Harley didn't always do things right, but this is one time they did the best anyone could.

With o-rings everything gives and takes anyway. Thats a good thing.

Just line up the manifold to the carb and support before you cinch up the clamps and test for leaks. If it isnt the angle where the manifold seals right, youre going to have to tweak the bracket to match. Like fileing the bottom hole usually. Or bending it where the PITA Jubillee horn went on Duos.
The tweakable bracket is the only thing good about the horns.

Almost respectful, xcept for the bugcatcher horn thing,

I would suggest that if the correct support bracket is used and the carb and manifold correctly installed, filing would not be needed on the bracket. Attached are pics of the bracket from my 65. Odd looking bracket but it is OEM and seems to work well.

In a perfect world your right.
But the manifold rules.
