Internal Throttle

#1

Post by tattoo mark » Sun Jul 12, 2009 3:50 pm

I am trying to fiqure out if there is something wrong with my internal throttle set up on my 62,when i twist the throttle open my cable gets shorter is that correct?i put a m74b on the bike ran the cable like its supposed to be routed.its working in reverse.i also tried using the bracket that mounts to the center motor mount it works, but i thought the cable wire pushs out [gets longer]when you roll the throttle open and wire gets shorter when close the throttle?if thats the case mine is working opposite.

My 62 gets longer when twisted and short when returned. I don't know how this will sound but maybe left grip on right side??? I'm open for shots now

There are two types of throttle spirals, one pushes, one pulls. You have a spiral for a different carb set-up than your M74, most likely for a later Tillitson or Bendix model. Spirals are available to correct it. What carb was on before? what year are the handlebars off of?

Mark!

It sounds like you have the later reversed spiral installed.

There are two. I had a linkart on my 65 five. it had the spiral that pushed when you opened the throttle. I swapped to an SandS. It needed to pull when opened. Picked up the internal spiral from Old Dude, I think they are out of Georgia. 1877-653 3833. Good folks to work with. Ray

Mark!

56220-53 is the correct sleeve according to the Parts Book.

I haven't a later book handy, but the "pull" sleeve you have is probably a -67 or -72 number.

It is an easy swap, requiring only a very large screwdriver, and a little WD-40 to get the grip off.
