Swingarm preload ??

#1

Post by George Greer » Mon May 07, 2012 4:14 am

Hi all...

Got a question thats been bugging me, and I don't mean to ask anymore dummer questions than necessary.

When I was home in May, I assembled as much of the project bike as I could, given the amount of parts that I had collected to make sure it all fit, and I could see what I was lacking.

I put the swing arm/bearings/seals/spacers on, and attempted to "set the preload"...........but I did not have access to all the tools that I am used to having, like when home, so I was not able to really "crank-er-tight", given the amount of tools that my son-in-law has.

So the swingarm, did not seem to get any kind of diference in feel. Is there a specific torque or torque range that you guys use.........or what do ya think that I am doing wrong?

Thanks.

George

The factory recommends using a scale on the swingarm and setting it to two lbs preload. I put a bar through my axle and hold the swingarm level with the scale (fish scale) on the bar and tighten the bolt until I have two lbs of pull.

I know, I won't........

It just seemed that the preload did not change when tightening the bolt...........and I did not want to snap it off.

According to that page, is exactly what I did............

Except I did not tighten the bolt to the point of stripping the threads of the bolt out, or of the frame.

I understand the procedure, I guess that I just did not have enought tools ie...longer breaker bar, to put enough umpf onto the bolt.

I'll check it again when I get back to the US again.

Thanks all..

George
