Is this Solo Seat Leather NOS?

#1

Post by CanuckDave » Sat Nov 03, 2012 1:17 am

I picked up this seat today for $150. The seller had the seat rivets (sadly they're chrome) replaced but claims the leather is original. I've seen this leather once before but can't place it where I can't remember. I think it is nos. Anyone have any idea?

Thanks

My guess is a recoved seat using the original rivet strip.
The leather fits the front smoothly on original seats.

Do not confuse the term NOS (new old stock, as in never been used before ) with used OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer, original equipment, but in any condition from new to junk). If it has been repaired it is not NOS. And that closeup looks like Royalite, not leather at all. And th repair job looks pretty amateurish!

yes I should have said eom, not nos and the seat and the seat taken to someone that knows what he is doing. it's the leather I'm seeking an answer to. No hard feelings and thanks for input.

CanuckDave!

I have a "Royalite" cover with a similar imprint, however it is obviously rubbery, and cannot be mistaken for leather.

Its leather binding strip has decayed from the seatpan, perhaps from neat'sfoot deterioration.

Your's has a very fresh-looking strip, and I would imagine the shiney rivets are actually nickel.
It may not be a "pro"-quality job, but it may have been the best the material allowed.
It's a helluvalot better than I could do. That's why I've got one hanging loose on the wall.

Cotten is correct, the cover is Royalite plastic not leather. The binding ( leather strip) is not original and the rivets should be black Japanned steel.

worshamcastle!

I didn't know they also were called Royalite until Robbie posted it.
(If its in Palmer's,.. I forgot.)

My cover is worn quite smooth, but supple with good foam.
The bindings gave out on the outside.

Are conservations part of your repertoire?

Tom-- Sorry, I did not mean to slight Robbie at all as his knowledge base goes way beyond mine when it comes to old bikes. Yes, conservation of seats is a part of what I do here at the Castle and I usually have better luck with the Royalite covers than leather.

Worshamcastle!

If you would like to post your 'vitals' here for myself and others,
I shall get it boxed with its pan, and into the Post Office directly.

Looking forward to it!
