Neck bearings and cups

I am trying to put together a '51 using a V-Twin frame. The distance between the upper and lower tree is too far apart to allow the tin to bolt up.I'm using V-Twin neck bearings and cups for '48-'86.Should I have used the '48-'59 bearings and races? Is the cone nut for '49-'59 thinner?

yeah buddy! Use the '48-59. '60-up cups and races are taller. I posted a pix of them under re-pop> projects> Fork Cups. The'48-'59 cups are chrome, but make for the right span for the tinware. Or else,... just elongate the top holes in each side- tab of the front panel where it needs to match up with the tree hole and keep your '60 cups in there. Use that cone nut with the sprocket-looking thing laminated on top (wonder if there was ever a wrench for that pattern? Why is that sprocket thing on the cone nut in the first place?), tighten until the forks will move slowly to the left and right, then install the castle-type-looking nut for the damper.
Note: A way to "read" the V-Twin catalog is to look at the years they are offering for a particular part. Try and get the part that they have less years for. When V-Twin says they have a part that fits alot of years, that's what they mean....that they part WILL fit on all those years, but it isn't historically correct....but it will work. The fork cups and how they are listed is a perfect example.

Thanks for the reply.I ordered p#24-0121('60&up).Then tried p#24-126('49-'59).Only .0015 difference in height.Would you have the bearing/race p# for the '49-'59?My trees are 1/4" too high at this point.Arrrrgh!

So, you got the '60, (24-0121) and they're too high. And you got the '59 (24-0126) and they are chrome cups right? And you found only a one and a half thousands difference in the height of the different cups, right? I have both cups and bearings for them. I have two old races (the ones I posted on re-pop> project) What's the bearing number on the '59 bearing you have? I think it's a 4402L or 44 something.
I have a note in my old ser. manual that says they discontinued the '59 bearing and race at the bearing house. Got to check that out with a phone call.

I don't have the correct '59 bearing & race so I don't have a p#.If you have the right p# for those or a contact for where you might have gotten yours I would really appreciate the help.I'm at a stand still on this til I get the right parts.Thanks.

Hang in there... I've had a "flurrie" of plumbing work lately. I will read the notes i have on the '59 cups and races and I will call the bearing house to see what's what and post the '59 bearing and race numbers by Friday. Don't do anything. I have pix of cup height differences to post over on re-pop. You know, it may be that the accumulative difference associated with the two '60 cups, make for an extra 1/4" height. If so and the '59 cups are history, you may have to use the ol' Foredom die grinder to elongate the s/s fork cover tabs. I have new re-pop '59 and new re-pop '60 to compare for youse, but i got's to get the people's plumbing problems fixed first. We'll get to the bottom of it by Sat. morning.

I had a chance to look at some future chapters and yep, there's a pix of my hands grinding the eight holes in the s/s/ panels to elongate them. The notes say that doing this will allow the bottom of the s/s/ covers to cover the tops of the fork covers like they should. But...hang on, I've got more research to do. I can have this info by Friday morning.

Ok, here's the scoop on the fork cups. The '49-59 cups and races you want from V-Twin are (VT 24-0126) (chrome, yuck, but they have them) They have 32 sets in stock.
The ones you DON'T WANT are '60 up (VT 24-0253). They list as 48-86.
The problem with your extra "developed height" is that I measured an old OE '60 cup (cup height only NOT including the stem height too) and it is 0.680 tall. Then I measured the VT '60 cup height and it is 0.710. So, right there is a difference of 0.030" times two is 0.060" of extra added height.
Here are the bearing and race numbers:
1. '49-59 race Timken # 07196
bearing # 07100
2. '60-up race is # L4461
Bearing # L4464
You need to get VT (24-0126) '49-59 cups, bearings and races, because you can't just buy the '49-59 cups plain from Tedd. You can buy just the '49-59 race (VT 12-0365) and the 49-59 bearing (VT 12-0334)....if...you have '49-59 bare cups. However,....I see that you already ordered the '49-59 cup assembly complete (VT 24-0126) and you say that there is only 0.0015" difference in cup height from the'60 VT cups? Well......we have a problem. It looks as though they have used the same re-pop '60 cup which is taller than the OE '60 cup by 0.030" and just bored the re-pop cup smaller for the smaller '59 bearings and races. Is this true? Are you holding the (VT 24-0126) '49-59 cup and bearing assembly? Do they have a 07100 bearing number?
