1949-52 handlebar end plug part number

#1

Post by craig60pan » Wed Sep 23, 2009 1:36 am

Am trying to find if the handlebar end nut has a separate part number for the model years 49-52.
I show 56287-36 for 37 - 48 and 56288-53 for 53 - 61. On my 51 the screw had been dinged up so much that a previous owner actually installed a bolt in the center of the screw to tighten it.
While it works I would like to do it right.
Can you get the screw separately or if you get a new set of grips, do they have the spring/screw already installed?
Inquiring minds want to know

Colony makes the handlebar end nuts, part #56287-36. Eight bucks a pair.

CJ - you may need to post a photo of your bars and grip sleeve so we know what you're dealing with. 51 should have closed end grips with the grip sleeve retained by a collar and two small screws at the front rather than a large screw from the back ... Perry

I don't understand, you have a 51 FL and you need parts for springer handlebars?

No it's a hydra. I was using the red circle to show the part number of the 48 and earlier part number.
Here are some pictures.

If you can use 56287-36 on a 49-52 how do you get the screw out without trashing the grip?

Isn't the diagram you posted for a 53 and later handlebar?

CJ, You need to remove the grip from the spiral before removing the end screw. Shoot some WD40 or even liquid dish detergent up under the grip and it will come off for you after a short struggle. :D

I didn't say that screw is for a 1949-'53 handlebar spiral, you asked where to get that part number, and I responded that Colony provides a reproduction.
I have learned to not second-guess people--- it was obvious to me you were NOT showing a '49-'53 handlebar, but it's your bike and might've had later or earlier bars on it. I am well-versed on handlebar spirals---- I have a '52 FL which came to me with later-style handlebars and have since aquired the correct handlebars and all the controls.
The bars in your photos are not the early style ('49-'53) they are the later style ('54-'59). None of the spiral parts are interchangeable. There are those who say that the later-style spirals operate more smoothly than the early style.

Is the thread inside the handlebar damaged? Mine was. I had to clean it out with a big jesus tap.

Did not mean to say you were saying that 56287-36 was for the 49-52, was just asking if it would work on those bars.
But more to the point what do the 49-52 bars look like, compared to the 48 and earlier and 53 and later?
On the pictures Hydra posted is the bar on the left the correct one for 49-52?

No the thread is fine. I think the bolt was added because the screw slot was too bad to turn the screw and the bolt fixed that problem but caused a different one.
I could put it back together the way it is and unless you top off the end cap, you would never know the difference

CJ
No, the one on the RIGHT is correct for 1949-1953. The only difference is in the reinforcing sleeve added at the opening for the control cables in 1951. So to be exactly correct for 1951, the handlebars should have that reinforcing sleeve. But the control spirals are the same from 1949-1953. The change came in 1954.

Here's a photo of some 1949-53 handlebars.

This is what the plunger on the end of the control cable should look like. (1949-1953)
