Spark control cable ferrel???

#1

Post by FelthamW » Mon Nov 02, 2009 12:52 pm

Greetings! I am new here. Spent just about all afternoon yesterday in front of my PC because of this site! Not a bad thing.......

Question: do any of you original, unrestored panhead owners have a ferrel on the spark control cable - down, past the cable clamp near the distributor?

I have been told (by someone of huge authority that sells replacement cables, etc.) that "No, they never did".

But, I was judged as having it "missing".

If anyone does have a ferrel, can you reply with the year of your bike noted in the response?

Thanks!
(I like this site!)

good question Wayne.

I've had my '49 FL a long time and it has never had one on it, but that doesn't mean it never did. I'm sure the control coil is the original cloth covered one that came on the bike. All my flatheads have a ferrel on them but the timer is in a little different spot and there is more clearance around the end of the control coil. The pans didn't have much room down there between the relay bracket and the timer.

anybody know for sure?

Somebody correct me if Im wrong,
Not knowing what year you have, according to Palmers book, top of page 55, all rigid handlebar control coils have Parkerized ferrules at the outside ends fitted over the end of the fabric with a portion of the bare wire exposed past the ferrule. A 3/8" wide ferrule for the early coil and a 5/16" wide ferrule for the late coil. This ferrule prevents the fabric from fraying at the end.
I'll bet Old Dude has these ferrules.

Well, I'll be!!! Thank you, James.
You may have solved the mystery by sending me back to "the book".
Your text described the Rigid Springer bars.
For the Glide handlebars and rubber-mounted-springer bars "Only the 1958 -1973 Servi-car control coils have ferrules fitted over the ends of the fabric; the ferrules are 5/16th inch wide".
Right there on page 55, lower right hand corner.
I am humbled and amazed. Every 1/4 point counts this go 'round.
Wow, Bruce Linsday was right!!! (I just needed documentation and there it is).
He said to me that if they would have come that way, he'd sell 'em that way!
Thanks again!

well i guess the day i photographed this unrestored '55 i got pictures of every cable end EXCEPT the one you need. it looks like every cable on the bike had a ferrule but i cannot provide the definitave proof you need.

check out the cable clamp attached to the handlebars securing the brake cable like the earlier bikes.

i would like to pick your brain on some other minute details about '55's when you have some time..

enjoy!

john :D

The B&W pics, I already had. (Thank you, Chris)

Those color photos almost made me cringe - especially that handlebar cable clamp (that I don't have) until I realized it goes on Speedster bars and not the Buckhorns I do have.
I think that the written word in Bruce's book will suffice in front of the judges. I will just have to show them where it says "no control cable ferrules except '58 - '73 Servi-cars" in regards to the timer and throttle cables.

John,
Thanks for those unrestored '55 pics. I saved them. If you have anymore, I sure would appreciate them. I too collected random '55 bike pics for reference. I would be glad to share. PM me.

BTW, no Jubilee horn, with siren, with luggage/tool box on rear fender-how cool is that?
Uh oh, I see some things that I am going to get dinged on...better to find them now than to have a judge tell me.

Thanks everybody for all your help. I have found this site to be the most helpful of all the antique bike sites. It took me a while before I stumbled onto it, but now I am addicted. Lots of good info as I search through it.

Rubber down.
Shiny side up.
Bugs in my teeth.

The box on the back fender is a First Aid Kit.

There is a VERY interesting story that goes with the bike, there were 2 of them found together and they were originally police/military escort bikes.

I'll let John tell ya the story, its almost like an Urban Myth, but I saw both of the bikes myself and its a believable story.
