Post by TimmyV » Sun Jan 24, 2010 6:11 pm

Can anyone please post a good picture of a 1961- 1964 FLH oil tank decal placement ? I have a couple on order from Antique Cycle supply & want to get 'em right when I apply 'em.
Thanks in advance !

I see that you're not getting much response to your question. I was curious myself so I pulled Bruce Palmer's book off the shelf. On page 630 and 631 there are 2 factory photos which appear to be both sides of the same bike, a prototype '62 FLHF. The decal on the right side of the bike was placed at an angle with the top and bottom roughly parallel with the top and bottom of the oil tank. The decal on the left side is more or less parallel with the ground. Is this really the way they mounted those?

If you can't decide how to mount the "H" I would just get one of Carl Olsen's Pin-Up decals; "Be A Man - Ride A Pan", and stick that on the tank instead. I think Rick has one on his '62, looks good!

Mike, Thanks for the tip about Palmer's book. I looked at those pictures, however it would appear that their placement differs slightly from others I have seen, such as this :

oiltankdecalleftside.jpg
I really wasn't trying to be lazy about this, just wanted to get 'em correct, that's all. Palmers' book also shows a '61 on page 626/627, a '63 on page 633 & last but not least a '64 on page 634. All of the decals appear to be placed slightly different in elevation or angle so I just wasn't certain.

Thanks again for your reply.

I think it was one of those things where the guy on the assembly line used the "mark one eyeball". Any give tech probably put it in more or less the exact same place, but there was probably a noticeable difference from tech to tech.

I gotta agree Steve. Different day, different guy, different position on the tank.

The thing that puzzles me is that 1962 factory photo. Did they really position the decals at two different angles on opposite sides of the tank? If the same guy put both decals on the oil tank did he position the right side at an angle so it was parallel to the tank top and the left side straight so it was parallel to the ground? ?????

just curious...

All the pix I mentioned had me wondering too, FlatHeadSix. Placement appeared to me to be quite random. Think I'll simply try to get 'em both the same & call it good.
Appreciate the input guys !

Not sure what "correct" is but here's my '62 in an earlier incarnation.

And here's a current shot. A little irreverent but anybody who's seen my bike knows it's a rider and never has
or never will be judged. ...Rick http://www.Pan-Clan.com/
