panhead inner primary chain cover

#1

Post by namor5 » Wed Dec 01, 2010 2:21 am

Question for the group- on a 1958 74 inch panhead , the steel inner primary chain cover.
What is the actual physical difference between the 60619-58B (hand shift) and the 60620-58B (foot shift), are they interchangable or not. Why different part numbers betwwen foot and hand shift?

Thanks

I was gazing at the parts book a couple of weeks ago wondering the same thing. Would also love an answer to this one. Bob

I think the main difference is the hand shift model has a rear chain splash guard spot welded to it. The foot shift model doesn't have room for the splash guard because of the ratchet top....Rod

Rod, thank you! This would explain why I have four later inners without the slash guard. The other thing that’s been driving me nuts is why two of them have the drain nipple to the rear and the other two have them just about centered. Palmer makes mention of this and concludes he doesn’t know. Bob L

Here's a page I did a few years ago on 55 and later inner primary differences ... Perry

A couple of the big time ebay sellers keep trying to sell 55-64 inner primaries. One size does not fit all, they don't seem to care...Rod

Maybe they just don't know. I've messaged a few letting them know certain things and for the most part they were very greatful and updated their listing.

"Most" being the operative word here. Some are not and will tell you mind your own business or worse! I've given up on trying to help most of them. Just remember-"buyer beware".

Rod and Perry, thanks for that excellent information, now I can move forward on my project. Being out of the panhead world for 30 years, who is my best source for an accurate reproduction or NOS part?
Thanks all, Roman

Check the recently created "Vendors" section in this forum. And don't be afraid to ask questions about specific parts you are interested in--- not all repops are created equal..! Many people here will have had experience with certain various repop parts of one kind or another....

Ok been looking on ebay for months for the 58 inner primary with the deflector shield with no luck, never see one listed. So can I assume the inner without the deflector will work adequately?
Also how is the oil drain nipple attched, brazed or welded or other?

Thaks Roman
