right rear fender suport sticking out to fasr ??? 1959 pan

I'm sending a photo of the right rear fender suport on my 59 pan these are new and the one seems to be sticking way out to far .I can force it back in to where it should be but I wonder if it may pull the left one out of line .. They are both mounted the same to the shock bolts. Oh yeah, If the fender and bumper look out of line everything is just finger tight or less at the moment ,I'm just seeing how it will all line up ..BTW I guess I will have to pull the rear axel to drop the rear tire to get the nuts on the bolts that hold the fender to the suport.. The more I screw up the more fun it is cause It going to take longer to finish ,and I love working on it when I have a few days in a row to concentrate on it alone..

You say it is new? As in nos/oem or Tedds? Tedds V-Twin stuff is infamous for poor fitment.

Well I bought them new from Antique cycle way back in the 90's when I had my 1961 restored ,it was never ridden but was stolen and recovered less the engine ,so I bought a 59 basket case for the engine mainly ,and am building a 59 now .These are off the 61 .but not the original ones ,the restorer guy probasbly kept them ,I was running a business and had no time or inclination to tackle such a big project. Should I try shimming something or risk cracking the chrome by bending it or just pull it in and bolt it to the fender and see what happens?

heres a pic of the bike when I bought in 1987,never rode it more than 100 miles and had it restored.. It had sat since 1974 and still had the 74 license on it .. The dealer in Spokane had it on consignment ,I brought it up here to Calgary..
PS check out the front wheel covers ,theres one on each side ,the dealer told me the bike had options he had never seen before ,but were oem add ons .Also the tailpipes sweep upwards after they pass the bags, then straighten out agaon like an S shape ..

If you lay the left and right strut side by side are they symmetrical.....or does the right one looked tweeked? If it is you could untweek it with a shop rag,a couple of blocks of wood and a vice. Or you could take a chance and not tweek it and it might pull your fender over to the right and run the risk of rubbing your tire on a good pot hole. (oversized?) You could pull your shocks and drop your swingarm if you dont want to pull the axle.

I've never owned a swingarm pan, could you be missing a spacer on the front bolt?

Panacea Thanks ,thats another reason to pull the top shock bolts . I dont think this arm was out of line when it was on the other bike ,but I'd never know at this late date ..I had wondered about what you mentioned..Thank you ..

its been awhile since i've taken my 65 apart but if memory serves me it goes frame stud strut shock then nut.
you've got frame strut stud shock nut.i think if you try it things will line up much better.

I just double checked against my parts manuals ,I have the right sequence of bolts and spacers etc. I think Ill remove the fender and pull the arm over to where it should be ..

Is that an optical illusion or is your left shock off center?

There are no spacers. Only the washers on the shock. The strut lays right against the frame casting and if it's out that far, there is only two things that can be wrong. It's bent or it Oriental crap. Nothing else.

There is a third. The frame casting could be bent. I doubt this but in an accident anythings posible. Bob L

Mark how would the wrong shock stud have do with the strut. It presses up against it, not between it and the frame casting. Bob L

Not all shock studs are created equal.....some have longer shoulders....some are shorter. I had this problem with my 63. Its not the thread length...its the shoulder length. I had to dig around in a box of used shock studs to find two that would center my shocks.

Bob
After rereading your post I realized we are talking about two different things....I thought you were responding to my comment about the left shock being off center.
