56 tank stripes

#1

Post by Gregg » Sat Apr 02, 2011 3:57 pm

Does anyone have a pattern, measurements or good, scalable side photos of original 56 tank stripes? I know Dave Swanson was asking awhile ago, but don't know if he was successful. I don't want to go through the time and expense of a new paint job and then find out I'm off!
Thanks
Gregg

I have templates for my KHK made from an original paint tank. I didn't pursue it when I got my 56 pan with "parade" paint.

I wouldn't attempt a 56 FL without a set. Approximations stand out like a sore thumb when you know what they are supposed to look like.

Good luck on the search.

I thought the 56 was badges only. I took a look in the bible and I see no stripes. Just what are ya tring to position on the tank? Bob

The two-tone '56 Slash pattern is an odd shape and a pattern is pretty much a necessity to get it right.
Wish I could help but I don't have that tank.
If I find some info I'll post it.

Bob, 55 was badges only. 56 had the "swoosh" tank panel.

Thanks to all for the help!
Bob, Palmer only shows an FLE and a servicar both in what appears to be police silver. The civilians had the swoosh/slash unless requested otherwise. BTW, I looked at the map for the first time today, and I'm not far from you, out on the Island. Maybe we'll meet up at an event sometime.

Thanks Dave, I thought you might have located a set of patterns. Oh well. And Robbie, I appreciate the help.
I can use a dead on side photo if anyone locates one, or has an old tank.

Thanks to all again
Gregg

G'day, I reckon this would be very close!

Nice tapering lines at the rear of the tank.

So it's the paint you're talking about. This is what I couldn't figure out. Dave you'll have to forgive me. I haven't got a clue what a Swoosh Is until Pete put that pic up. Gregg out of the ton of crap I have. I know that one of those tanks is not amongst it. Gregg, is that Loong Giland!

Thats pretty damn close to a perfect side shot. You wouldn't happen to have the shifter side would you?

And yes Bob, Long Guyland, but I hope to God I don't sound like that!
Thanks for looking

Best

This is the HD Museum 56. This shot gives you an idea just how much curve there is in front of the panel. The desire is to see a an optical illusion of a straight line when looking at the tank straight to the side. Without a curve of proper proportion the front of the "swoosh" would look like it bulges out.

Gregg, when making my 56 KHK patterns I found only slight differences in the tank panel from left to right tanks. I did make 2 patterns, but I could have easily gotten by with one. The differences are small enough that no one would be able to tell, even you.

Dave
That's a good shot of the front. There is alot more curve than is visible from the side.
I was more concerned about how the shifter gate affects the stripe. I guess it's enough below it that the stripe isn't affected. Here is a pic from Color write of a new paint job that shows it under the gate mounting holes.
Unfortunately, the only access to a 56 paint bike I have here is a repaint at my local dealer.

Gregg, I don't know if ya explored this avenue but John Pierce also paints and he might have that pattern. Bob
