Spongy handlebar dampers

how do you remove the black rubber dampers from the old style/early big twin triple tree.
With the 4" risers and apehangers I'm using they are way too spongy!
Any thoughts on replacements? or should I just bolt it all down tight!...

Thanks Haggis.

You use a B.F.P.: Big Friggin Press!
(Did that get censored?)

Beware that the repops (like V-TWIN) are wimpier than worn out originals. You might as well stick washers in and make it rigid. With apes, it might be the safest thing to do anyway. (It's your carpel tunnels!)Re: spongy handlebar dampers!!

Thanks for the input Cotten......(where do I find a B.F.P and is it legal to operate one in your basement!!!!)
Picked up a couple of chrome steel washers that will fit in the top of the tree....Think it would be o.k. to cut the bottom of the dampers flush with the underside of the tree ,then use a same diameter washer on both and bolt it /squeeze it all together?
( car pool tunnel syndrome...ain't that what took lady Diana out!!!) Thanks again, Haggis

I preach that a stock parts shouldn't be cut. But I don't practice that ethic myself.
The last time I made a set 'solid', I lathe-cut stepped washers for the top, and the shoulder was enough to make it rigid.
What is "chrome"??
