vfactor end regulator and generator wiring

#1

Post by Dave Beck » Tue Apr 03, 2012 5:21 pm

I just installed a Vfactor end regulator and generator combo. It is a 2 wire ook up, one from the battery on the end of the regulator and then one from the armature. I ran the armature wire to one end of the generator idiot light and the other end of the light to the ignition side of my switch. It seemed to be working great but then I checked and there was no voltage increase when I reved the engine. I checked and the idiot light was blown. Have I got this wired correctly. I did polarize the generator according to instructions.

Thanks for any and all help.
Dave

I replaced the bulb, the bulb glows dimmly when key is on. When I start the engine and rev it up the light burns super bright? I just charged the battery and this still happens.

Dave!

"Vfactor" is a new one to me.

Was there a techline phone number, or url, on its literature?

Your connection description was bound to confuse me, but the first things I would suspect are a bad ground to the regulator, or that it was junk out of the box.

Please tell me that the generator is a standard design, and the regulator only parasites upon it, because the generator is working if it can pop a filament.

I bought the generator regulator setup fro BKrider on you guessed it (e-bay) it looks identical to a cycle electric. It has the regulator on the end. I have done a little more testing on the wiring and with the bike running the armature lead is putting out over 20 volts when it is reved up. I think the regulator is bad. The voltage on the armature will be at about 13.8 to 14 volts at idle then will shoot up with the rpms.

I have decided the regulator is shot so sending it back and going with a cycle electric.
Thanks,
Dave

I would be concerned about wiring it through the light as any time the filiment in the light burns out you end up with an open circuit & the possibility of frying the regulator. I would think that a direct run to the switch with a second run to the light would be a safer approach. You might want to contact the manufacturer and ask about alternative ways to wire in the light.

Hauula:

I don;t think it is wired "through" the idiot light.

Rather, the light is wired with one end to the battery, and the.h other to the generator, as a sort of "voltage indicator".

Run the cycle electric...It is a great product, had mine for 12 years ...not one issue. one wire to the battery....thats it.

adam,
you got it, that is the reason I am going with the cycle electric, not even going to hook up the light.

got the new cycle electric generator, votage regulator system installed, ONE! wire only to the battery, works great! Sometimes trying to save a few bucks just isn't worth the effort. I am sold on their system and it is made in U.S.A.!!!!!

Folks,
Let us not forget that CE makes quality 2-brush generators WITHOUT the incredibly ugly end-mount regulators.

Adam!

The ugly endmounts are the new products.
They had been producing the standard generators, and conventional SS regulators for many years before they introduced the endmounts.
