Cycle Electrics 12 v low output/ 32 e replacement

#1

Post by 1951 adam » Sun Jul 22, 2012 10:29 pm

I checked the mounting instructions from CE, They dont mention anything about the mounting strap, I'm doing the 1/4 24 mod to the mounting holes....previously they where 5/16 studs, with no strap. There was never a strap on the bike when I got it, I'm thinking It needs it, but will it fit there generator? Any suggestions much appriciated, Adam

Thanks Richie, Did you shim on the cradle.? I know on a 32 e that the shims set the gear lash, and buffer the metal to metal contact, It seems not as wide as the 32, ....some investigation is in order...Adam

Do you mean you are installing 1/4-24 Helicoils in the genarator? I hope so. you are not modifying your cam cover holes, right?

Adam I am running a 65 genny & the strap has a coating on it like plyable plastic, no shimming required on mine ,just the 2 genny bolts .

Yes, but the cam cover had the 5/16 holes already....I don't think that will be an issue, the taper should not effect the correct screws being installed.

Well, if you already have 5/16" holes in the cam cover, I would think it makes more sense to go with the 5/16 bolts-especially since they will fit the genny without using inserts. Or are you concerned that you won;t be able to move the generator to set the lash?

The 32E replacement uses the 5/16" bolts, huh?

Andy, The 32e has 1/4 24 mounting screws, my goal is to put this bike back as close to stock as I can. I want to run my CE untill I get all I need for 6volt system. Its more for astetics then anything else , uniformity of hardware on cam side.

I am still scratching my head-what did you mean by "I'm doing the 1/4 24 mod to the mounting holes"

OK, so the 32E equivalent takes 5/16" screws, but you are using the Helicoils with 1/4" screws n it....

There is a fellow in eastern Canada that makes stainless bolts with the correct taper and slotted head and a 5/16 shank and 1/4-24 threads as a fix for using a 32E on drilled out cases and cam covers. If you're interested I'll get his e-mail for you.

He doesn't need that fix. He has drilled cases, and a generator that takes 5/16" bolts.

He wants to use 1/4" bolts, and sleeve the generator to accept them.

If he used the 5/16" bolts then he doesn't need a strap.

I think he is trying to retain adjustability, using 1/4" bolts and the shims, since his cam cover was drilled for the larger bolts.

Just having bigger holes doesn't mean they are in the correct position for gear lash.
